Lordsburg Council weighs public input on legalized gambling

Lordsburg council members discussed a proposed public hearing on legalized gambling with Felipe Alvarez requesting community support. The panel conditioned the plan on demonstrated interest and signed petitions, while discussing allowable funding and legal constraints. Other actions included a $4000 Lodger’s Tax grant for advertising and confirmations on housing resolutions and staff appointments.

Refresher CPR Course Offered Friday Evening

A CPR refresher course is set Friday July 13 from 6 PM to 10 PM at the ambulance building. Licensed individuals needing re certification may attend. No charge. For information call 542 8272. Council approved extending the 90 91 budget to 7 31 90 due to budget workshops. A July 19 workshop will set guidelines for loaning about 60000 from a UDAG grant to Shady Grove Motel. Applications received. a council decision will come at the next meeting. Executive session lasted about an hour with a report only on the hire of one person at the Special Events Center. No other topics were disclosed.

County Fair Queen Contest Set For August 14

The 1990 Miss Hidalgo County Queen Contest themed County Fair Is In The Air will select the queen and court August 14 at Lordsburg School Cafetorium at 7 p.m. Entrants range from 3 to 21 with multiple age categories. Omega Alpha Sorority hosts with entry blanks at local offices. deadline August 1.

Lordsburg Forms Tourism Development Committee

The Lordsburg Tourism and Development Committee met to form officers. Clyde Preston becomes president, Vanita Hatch vice president, Ann Marie Moore secretary, and Richie Franks treasurer. Other members include Kiki Chaires, Bob Martin, Manny Rendon, Dan Brown, and Mac McPherson as state delegate. The group aims to clear plywood from Railroad Avenue storefronts and win merchant cooperation for displays, with hopes to relocate the Chamber of Commerce and Lordsburg Museum to Railroad Avenue and place billboards near Bowie and west of Deming to promote Lordsburg and Motel Drive.

Additional Housing Sought in Lordsburg Council Session

Peggy Taviton of the Lordsburg Housing Authority told the City Council applications have been made for 70 new units here. Thirty five would be in Pyramid Village and 35 under Section 8. HUD offers 28 units locally. If approved Region V would keep the 28 and local control 35. She urged seeking Section 8 to boost funding. A CIAP fund hold up risk noted due to a 1987 audit error.

Center Closes For July As Renovation Begins In Village

The senior center will be closed for July due to construction with meals delivered to homebound and regulars. Home care continues and Friday shopping remains. Call 542-9414 for information. A motion of forgiveness of debt was noted with about $500,000 to fund unit renovations. a bid of $100,963.97 from Silver City Plumbing met bonding requirements. CIAP funds from 1989 finance the project. Mayor Diaz announced speed limit signs, curb painting, and soon speed bumps. A Favizon housing improvement request was approved.

Detachment 1 A Battery 200th air Defense Artillery New Mexico Army National Guard from Lordsburg participates in two week annual training at Ft. Bliss Dona Ana Range Camp.
