Corrected standings show Bishop Lumber, Banner and others atop a busy district with Bishop compiling the best record. Local teams played through rainouts while summer programs highlighted basketball badminton and tennis at the gym with about 200 nightly attendees.
Acting Chief Claude Lytle announced the appointment of Ray Camacho Jr and Ken Mit to patrolman positions. Camacho filled the vacancy created by Ellis resignation weeks earlier, while Mit replaces Manuel Garcia after four years in another city department.
In the Little League and Pony League standings several players post averages above .500 with Shell Odera Montoya at .600 and Scofield’s Balsa at .583 leading hitters. Lopez and Valdez top runs and RBIs in Pony League, with four homers each. Remaining schedule lists dates through August with matchups across CPS Slicks Sheriffs LULAC and other teams.
The All-Star Pony League and the Bowie Arizona team will play Saturday night at 8 p m at the ball park. On July 4 Bowie edged the Pony League 7 5. The public is invited to attend this ball game.
Howard Harkey announced a swim meet for August 4 at the City Pool with 24 events. Each age group 10-12 13-15 and 16-18 will have both girls and boys sections.
Gary Bowman 15 son of Mr and Mrs Ed Bowman suffered critical head injuries and a possible skull fracture after falling from a pickup bed on Highway 70 80 near the city limits. He was taken by Heather ambulance to Providence Memorial Hospital El Paso in a coma with vertebral fracture and concussion following an emergency treatment. A rumor of his death proved false. He and his father were returning from a motel delivery Gary was riding atop three mattresses when a wind gust hurled him to the pavement.
Eighty nine persons faced Game and Fish prosecutions in May for violations across New Mexico. Fines totaled 2480 dollars plus 420 dollars in court costs. 24 violators lacked valid fishing licenses.

Lordsburg seniors meet at the First Methodist Church for a noon pot luck luncheon Thursday July 19. Meat and drink provided. bring a salad vegetable or dessert. Short program afterward. Frank Tatsch of Silver City was the apparent low bidder for Hidalgo General Hospital. His base bid was 408 350 dollars with 31 550 dollars for alternate No 2. C E Kistenmacher of El Paso bid 423 300 dollars. John Cornell of Clovis topped bids at 442 800 dollars. A contract awaits final approval from Hill Burton funds.
The Bureau of Land Management completed the Mimbres Mesquite Control Project on June 19. Southwest Air Contractors handled aerial spraying of 3 900 acres using a diesel oil and water mix at a total cost of 12 714 dollars. Treatments covered 2 540 acres on the Jess Thorn Ranch and 320 on Walter Hightower Ranch in Luna County plus 1 040 on Mahlon Everhart Ranch in Hidalgo County with private land extensions planned.
