Lions District Governor Talk On Service And Elections

District Governor addressed Lions stressing service to nation and homes. He warned of three looming problems: low voter registration in New Mexico, global communism, and home life breakdown. He urged purging communists and improving voting before November. Next meeting set for Tuesday July 13.

Impressive Installation Held for Legion and Auxiliary

The 1948-49 year looks bright as Legion and Auxiliary officers were installed at a joint meeting at the Dunagan home. A taco dinner prepared by Mrs. Cassie Martinez and Mrs. Paul Fierro accompanied the event. Members who missed the dinner are urged to attend future gatherings and support the completion of the new Legion Home under construction.

Lordsburg City Council Acts On Utilities and Bus Plan

Lordsburg city council met for its monthly session approving a 1700 survey for water gas and sewer needs. Officer Bogart offered resignation and clarified statements after a brief dispute. All-American Bus Lines potential pickup and drop off points from Steins to Deming were approved pending state public service commission approval. Notice for Intermediate Girl Scouts meeting at Miss Betty Sue Stone’s home on Saturday June 10 at 2 30 PM.

Miss Lordsburg of 1948 Contest Announced

The Miss Lordsburg pageant seeks entrants aged 16 to 19 who have resided in Lordsburg at least five years. Entries due by July 12 with photos submitted to the Chamber of Commerce or Betty Smith. Voting costs one penny per vote. the winner receives a silver cup and prizes from local businesses.

Charity Ball Set for July 17 at High School Building

A formal charity ball will be held Saturday night July 17 at 9 oclock in the High School Building to benefit the Hospital Drive. Miss Lordsburg will be crowned at the event and invitations will be mailed to all residents. If you do not receive one, contact the Chamber of Commerce office.

New Buildings Completed in Lordsburg Attractions

Two new business buildings in Lordsburg, the Saucedo building on South Main Street and the Yuca Lodge in West Lordsburg, show cement block construction with plastered finish. The Saucedo spans 60 by 60 feet, divided into three 20 by 60 sections for rent, one section already leased to an appliance store. The remaining two sections await tenants.

Banner Mines May Close Here If Strike Occurs

Local Banner Mines may shut permanently if the CIO union calls a strike. Manager E B Bowman notes low ore yields and rising costs, with workers demanding higher wages and benefits. The Yucca Lodge, built by Roy Vermillion, showcases new hotel units and expansion plans in Lordsburg.
