A large gathering of business and professional men along with county and city officers is convened at the Court House on Wednesday night July 14 to discuss local affairs.
A large gathering at the Palador Wednesday night heard strong calls for unity among business and professional groups to protect Lordsburgs tourist traffic. Attendees urged collaboration across 122 listed interests including oil firms, hotels, stores, and services to preserve the towns standing amid regional competition and to publish all participant names at a future meeting.
Mr and Mrs Harold Scofield and their grandson Chas ee spent the holidays in Bis Arizona, returning with memories of the warm visit and shared family moments.
The Hidalgo County Board of Commissioners at a July 6 meeting issued Banner Mining Company a permit to lay a natural gas pipeline along county highways. The line would connect either with Lordsburg Village Municipal Gas System or El Paso Natural Gas Company supply lines.
Mr. and Mrs. W. K Whitford and Mrs. S. P. Sanderson with two children visited from Tulsa Thursday afternoon. Mrs Whitford wrote on the Chamber of Commerce blotter that it was “An oasis to which we always look forward.”
Robert H Dickson, a mining engineer from New York and former superintendent of the old 5 Mining Co at Valedon, shakes hands with old friends here this week and expresses lasting care for this country.
Mr and Mrs Sherwood Culber gen and Mr and Mrs Tom Clayton attended the funeral of the late Sam Strain in Silver City. After services, the body was taken to Albuquerque for cremation.
Lordsburg contributed to the Fourth of July crowds at Silver City Cave Creek Tucson and KE Paso as fireworks ended. The only remaining sound in Lordsburg was the noise from fire crackers.
Mrs June Clegg traveled to El Paso on Thursday to meet her daughter June who is returning from Kansas where she spent the summer with her grandmother.
Romantic drama Wings of the Morning screens at the Palace Theatre next Thursday and Friday July 15 and 16. The gypsy granddaughter falls for a horse trainer who aims for the Derby as their lives collide in Technicolor with stars Henry Fonda Leslie Banks and Anna Belle.
The W. M. of the Baptist Church met with Mrs. Louise Capps this week. Members present were Mesdames Chas Pease Frank Corbel Bam Gass M C C Moore Felix Jones and hostess. An election of officers was held followed by refreshments of peaches whipped cream and water.
The Lordsbury Hidalgo library will close for an indefinite period as staff move to the new building. The closure affects patrons needing services and space for future operations.
Sheriff John Cavin helped track down a criminal named Dick Smith who stole tools, a Buick sedan contract, bedding, dishes, and a license plate. Smith fled to Little Rock Arkansas, where authorities agreed to extradite after a brief hold, promising to return with the car and suspect.
Mrs Florence Kline and children of Tucson visit Mr and Mrs Theodore Kline. Perry Upright spent the Fourth of July in Albuquerque New Mexico visiting friends and returned to Lordsburg on Tuesday.
The Smith family along with spouses held three reunions. The first occurred the Wednesday before July 4 at Gus Kimball in Apache. The second was with Mr and Mrs H Strange in Animas on the eve of the holiday. On July 4 Mr and Mrs Bailey Smith hosted all the families including Earl and Lee Smith and youngest brother Andrew, who left Tuesday for California to work as an electric welder for International Steel Company.
Miss Carol Conner and Sam Dabbs were married Saturday at the Conner home on 6th Street. The ceremony joined the couple in a family setting with local friends in attendance.
The club met Tuesday with Mrs Trimble as hostess using flowered paper plates cups sherbet dishes and bentwood spoons. Refreshments of sherbet punch and cookies were served to Mesdames B Hall J E Allen W H Emall Charles Puller FHW Singer P M McInnis and hostess. Mrs Olivia Wells was a guest.
The Missionary Society of the Methodist Church met Friday afternoon in the undercroft with Mrs F P H Singer and others as hostesses. Mrs Charles Fuller led the business, devotionals by Mrs R B Borden, topic on Miss Laura Haygood, a great missionary personality, and games led by Mrs Lundgren. Refreshments honored the Fourth. next meeting August sixth with Mrs George Trimble, Mrs C R Baas, and Mrs J H Baxter as hostesses. Mr and Mrs J H Clark visit in El Paso.
A. L. Green and son installed Sno-Breeze cooling plants at Dewey Jones cafe and Ralph Smiths railroad club. Additional units went to Up-To-Date stores cafe and lodging. The Green shop manufactures tin work and plumbing and supplies metal forms and machine shop equipment. Green plumbing shop is a stable local industry.
At a Tuesday board meeting the Education Board employed four teachers subject to budget approval. The hires include Mrs Thelma Ross Miss Beth Ball Miss Florence Cureton and Miss Olive Harper to replace Mrs Gracie Posner as kindergarten teacher. The board expects no trouble securing budget approval.
Mr and Mrs Ray E Elms welcomed four week old John Keith at Hotel dargo on Sunday. The infant weighs 6 pounds 3 ounces a gain of 1 pound 1 ounce since birth. John Keith was photographed with his sister Betty Ray on his fourth week anniversary.
Last Sunday's patriotic program drew a good crowd as Juanita Wellman recited the story of Clara Barton. Next Sunday Olive Ann Wright will lead a program on Men and Women Who Made the World Better. A sunset supper on Silver City road is scheduled for Friday evening with chaperones Mrs Pat Ewing and Mr and Mrs Brimberry. Members meet at 5 45 p m at the church and should stay for Sunday evening services. Thirteen attended last Sunday. Time is 7 00 p m. All youths ten to fifteen may join and older folks may listen.
Amelio Acosta and friends visited the Caballero ranch near Dwyer and found a very pure gasoline. Joe Deckert of Deming is drilling a well there and at 60 feet hit strong gasolene. The oil is strained and used directly in ranch trucks and for pumping water. Affielo notes yields up to 45 gallons daily with 40 percent purity and tests at 57.5 Baume.
In a letter to the Chamber of Commerce Governor Clyde Tingley says he cannot attend the City-County Library opening due to urgent state business. He thanks the organizers for the invitation and expresses appreciation for the courtesy.
Lion Secretary John Ball reports that District No 4 delegates traveling by special train to the 20th International Lions Convention in Chicago will pass Lordsburg Saturday at 4 P M July 17 The Lions urge all members to be present to greet the distinguished guests.
Miss Mary Ellen Shelly celebrated the Fourth of July with friends in El Paso. Local gathering included shared meals and fireworks set against the city’s festive summer atmosphere.
Walter F. Dunagan receives official wire appointing him superintendent of the C C Grazing Camp at Radium Springs between Las Cruces and Hot Springs. He had been confirmed at the Animal Grazing camp but Radium Springs, per policy, names a local superintendent. Dunagan left Wednesday for the new assignment and is expected to perform well.
Hob returned from Pasadena California where he spent time with his daughters. Mrs Jean Handy and Mrs Ottis Dyer say he has two fine grandchildren.
Mrs. L. B. Robinson hosted a Friday gathering for guests including Mr. and Mrs. Ed Gantt of Muskogee Oklahoma Mr. and Mrs. Bob Tevis and daughter of Burk Burnett Texas and Mrs J Kelly of Deming New Mexico All were former Terrell Texas residents and chums The group visited Dr. and Mrs Banks Austin where Mr Tevis recalled serving with Major Austin in World War France
Interest in the Dwyer oil strikes grows after a new well 66 feet deep is drilled near the Caballero ranch. The existing well, producing high gravity crude at about a barrel per day, sits at 24 feet water depth. Land surrounding the ranch has been leased and major oil interests are securing nearby acreage.
Word arrived Tuesday of the sudden death of Bam D Strain a respected mining engineer who prospected in southwestern New Mexico He worked with Engineer Warfel for the government and had recently operated a gold silver property in the Mogollon mountains near Big Dry Creek His death follows the passing of Warfel leaving many mourners and the bereaved widow in sympathy from friends and acquaintances
Marts Neelly chief of the immigration service with Mrs. Neelly are in Los Angeles enjoying a month long vacation.
Frank M. King associate editor of the Western Livestock Journal visited Lordsburg. King, a longtime cowboy turned publisher, is renowned for his live stock writings and books. He recently attended the 7th Texas Cowboy Reunion at Stanford, with the Journal widely circulated across western states and the U S.
Friday of last week near Ban Simon Mrs Mary Lee Fatty lost control of her car which overturned several times then landed her through the windshield. She suffered a dangerous wound between the left knee and ankle requiring 35 stitches at Lordsburg hospital. Her two children escaped serious harm and she is expected to be released soon.
Texaco National Road Test Fleet halted in Lordsburg on a July 4 holiday. Local leaders led by L B Robinson of Ritter-Walker Company welcomed 44 cars and 32 people with a motorcade, band, and film crew. Local officials and the Chamber of Commerce praised the hospitality and noted Lordsburg set a high standard for the tour.
A telegram to the Chamber of Commerce from J G Hernandez of the Mexico National railway announces a special excursion from El Paso to Mexico City leaving July 18 at 1 AM and returning by August 2. Deming will host a double celebration on July 17 with the annual Old Timers reunion and a free barbecue for about three thousand visitors on the Courthouse lawn. The underpass dedication and a big day of reunion and sports are planned with invitations to Hidalgo Grant Dona Anna Catron and Gleria counties and Lana county residents. An old time dance at the Armory headlined by Al Terry and his Armna cow hands will air from Phoenix with Governor Clyde Tingley and state officers in attendance.

Mr and Mrs Curly Walters and their daughter Betty of Animas were in Lordsburg Tuesday, stopping briefly during their trip.
