W A Short and Son operated a service station in Lordsburg for 23 years before his death. He was active in civic and fraternal groups, including Masons and Shriners, and served on the city council. His son Dies Short is noted among his survivors.

Infant Dies En Route After Bus Medical Emergency

Police were alerted at 3 AM on July 2 to Kirby's Cafe where a seven month old infant traveling with its mother on an American Bus line was found seriously ill. Doctors could not be reached. the baby died on arrival at the local hospital. Heather Mortuary arranged burial as the mother continued to California.

State Police Run Radar in Hidalgo County

New Mexico State Police units led by Sgt. Jerry Brunk and Joe Rutland operated a radar set near Lordsburg for two days. Eleven speeders were stopped on the first day and five citations were issued the next, with officers noting the device slowed highway speeds among residents.

June Planting Of Fish Heavy In New Mexico

The State Game and Fish Department reports extensive hatchery activity to plant waters in New Mexico before July 1. Roy E. Barker notes daily operations with vehicles to distribute up to 25,000 pounds of fish, with Gila County slated for heavy planting. From June 11 to 16 the Dot operation released 37,610 fish, 31,610 over 7 inches, signaling hot fishing around the Fourth.

Glen Smith Dies After Long Illness at Four

Glen Rey Smith age three died Wednesday in El Paso after a lengthy leukemia battle. He is survived by parents Raymond and a sister Joanne, with funeral services set for 2:30 PM Friday at Heather Chapel officiated by Rev. Robert Harvey. Burial in Mountain View Cemetery.

Hidalgo County records its second traffic fatality of the year after a Whitfield Co truck trailer became brake locked when the air hose disconnected on highway 70 80 east of Lordsburg. Driver A D Letcher reported placing flares and backing up to the trailer after the brake failure.

Local Teacher Attends Special Class At U of NM

Richard Robertson of Lordsburg is among 20 New Mexico teachers enrolled in a summer course at the University of New Mexico on radiation biology and the peaceful uses of the atom. The program, one of only three in the nation, is funded by the AEC and NSF with $50 weekly scholarships plus $12.50 per dependent. Dr. Martin W.
