Sewer Rates Raise To Compensate For Deficit

In a special budget meeting on June 26 City Council Finance Officer Randy Cooper backed a Finance and Administration Department plan to raise sewer rates to cover the ongoing deficit. The council agreed to a 20 percent sewer rate increase. Mayor Pro tem Smith urged completion of the fieldhouse using Ledger tax funds, with bids to be sought as funds permit. City crews plan paving on Airport Road and continuation of Cactus Drive Zinc St D St Woods St and part of Pyramid St. City Police Dept will be active at midnight June 30 with new supervisors effective July 1: Alec De La Garza Ed Cramer Sherry Arredondo Joaquin Marquez Ray Gomez. A policy limits department heads to base salary with no overtime pay. Council amended Resolution 87-9. Municipal court costs of 5 per guilty person will go to the county to cover jail expenses.

Collins Races To A First Place Finish

After just over a year of competitive driving Bill Collins won his first main event in El Paso driving a 2640 pound Carney chassis car built from 1974 76 Pontiac Trans Ams. He returns this weekend at Messilla Valley Raceway with a devoted pit crew led by collaborators Ellie Collins Coleen Collions Billy Collins Pam Collins Randy Collions Roland Kline Jack Holm and Scott Holm. Government Day To Be Held July 21 In Lordsburg

Lordsburg Hidalgo County will host a government day on July 21 with Governor Garvey Carruthers and a large delegation. Cabinet officials senator Dominici and Rep Skeen will attend alongside Ike Smalley Tommy Foy and local officials. Phelps Dodge representatives from Tucson Playas and Tyrone are invited. An expected luncheon draws about 150 attendees. Governors staff will meet the press and hearing voices from the public.

Be Careful With Fireworks This Fourth of July

Elston K. Grubaugh of New Mexico State University warns to check local ordinances before using fireworks as many areas ban them. Ensure landowner permission for private displays, keep children supervised, avoid lighters and matches, use punk lighters, never handle duds or spent fireworks, and keep pets indoors during celebrations.

Management Philosophy Has Changed

City hosts July 4 events at Short Park with fireworks

Lordsburg residents are invited to set up game and food booths for the Fourth of July activities at Short Park. Booth sponsors must clean up after the event and remove booths by the next day. The Lordsburg Volunteer Fire Department will stage its annual fireworks display Saturday at 9 30 PM southwest of the Short Park practice field. City Ordinances ban alcohol in streets parks and public meeting places. The City Council extends holiday wishes for a safe celebration.

City Takes Over Its Own Police Force

Hidalgo Sheriff Lloyd Payne returned control of Lordsburg Police Department to the City of Lordsburg with Ed Cramer named Police Chief. Deputies displaced by the move were mostly hired by the city. emergencies remain 911 calls with county dispatch still handling messages. Also noted is a two week patrol period by state and local officers and a roll over crash near Cave Creek injuring Wesley Hicks of Cotton City.

Animas School Board To Meet On First Tuesday

The Animas School Board will meet in regular session Tuesday July 7 at 7 30 p m in the Animas School Elementary Library. The public is urged to attend and the agenda will be posted in area post offices. A swimming lesson session begins Friday July 7 at 10 30 a m for two weeks with 30 minute classes daily Tuesday through Saturday and a $10 fee. Contact Fred La Marca at 542-3774 for more information.

Physicals Scheduled For Students At Playas Clinic

Animal public schools and Playas Clinic announce student physical dates for sports participation. Each student must have a physical on file prior to practice. The cost is 5 dollars per student. Call the Playas clinic for appointments on listed dates. Junior High: July 28, 30 1 00 PM to 3 30 PM and August 1 9 00 AM to 11 00 AM. High School: August 4, 6 1 00 PM to 3 30 PM and August 8 9 00 AM to 11 00 AM.
