Hidalgo copper smelter marks big 1976 investment for New Mexico
Phelps Dodge chairman George Munroe announced start of Hidalgo smelter operations near Lordsburg in July 1976. He cited a project cost over 250 million dollars including the new town of Playas and a 38 mile railroad, with further 50 million in upgrades. Heavy Damage After Rock Throws Plague Two Local Stores
An estimated 1000 in damage occurred at The Hanging Tree Studio and Amins Department Store during the night of January 24. Slag rocks smashed two plate windows at The Hanging Tree and one at Amins, a painting was ruined, and over twenty rocks were found around the buildings. City Police investigate with a 700 reward for those responsible. Animas Board of Education will hold a special meeting February 1 at 8 p.m. in the Animas School Library to canvass election returns.

Lordsburg voters will choose two of five candidates for the school board on February 1. Incumbent Henry Alvarez seeks re election in position one against A M Elbcio with Alvarez touting progress in curriculum facilities and student morale. Checks Held On Duncan Highway By Police Field Office
State Police Officer James Sides assisted by New Mexico Game Officer Gary Gottsponer conducted unannounced checks on Highway 70 at dawn to inspect licenses inspection stickers and other possible violations including game issues. The aim was to remind drivers that licenses and stickers may be near expiry.
