Truck tax bills loom in New Mexico session debate

Marijuana Seized South Of Animas

A large quantity of marijuana was confiscated on the Gray Ranch property about 32 miles south of Animas after a plane reportedly dropped bags. Eighteen bags of bricks were found, totaling about 700 pounds with an estimated $35,000 retail value. Investigations were taken over by Customs agents.

American Motor Inn Changes Hands in Wheaton Pair

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Merz and Robert Baldwin purchased the American Motor Inn from Mr. and Mrs. Mike Gabriel. The new owners took over January 1 and plan improvements including converting the banquet room to a public dining room and redecorating the dining area into a coffee shop. They aim to offer fine food at reasonable prices to attract local patrons.

Sherwood Culberson Hidalgo County Republican chairman met with Mrs Edward Neff in El Charro to promote ticket sales for the Lincoln Day dinner. Neff announced National Chairman Senator Robert J Dole of Kansas will be the keynote speaker. Dinner at 6 30 p m February 12 at the Hilton Inn Albuquerque costs 100 per couple.

U S Rep Harold Runnels announced 33 Second District nominees for the Air Force Academy Naval Academy and Merchant Marine Academy. He noted no West Point slots this year and that two Naval Academy spots and one Air Force slot are available with alternates possible based on tests and academy decisions.

Mayor Betty H Lazar files a personal lawsuit against Lockwood- Modern Construction Co and Bob Lockwood seeking 50000 dollars in damages over a January 21 1972 Lordsburg Liberal article. She alleges the piece falsely accused her of criminal acts misconduct dishonesty and lack of integrity. The mayor states the suit is a personal matter and not a city expense.

C of C Committee Approves Budget for 1972

The Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee approves an $8,000 budget for 1972 covering salaries rent utilities postage printing and travel. Income for 1971 was $8,049 with anticipated 1972 income at $8,000. About 100 members including 70 local businesses clubs organizations and individuals invested in the community.

Jones Low Bidder On Highway Bridge Job

The State Highway Department announced J W Jones Construction Co the apparent low bidder for railroad bridge work in the east part of Lordsburg tied to the highway project. Bid totaled 485 870 40 while Gardner Bridge Co was next at 499 344 30. Engineer's estimate stood at 347 474 49. Work includes grade drain subbase shoofly tracks mainline and several concrete and steel bridges and related structures to carry runoff from the new highway.

Silver City Colts Defeat Lordsburg on Local Court 71-50

The AAA Silver City Colts beat the AA Lordsburg Mavericks 71-50 on Saturday night. The Colts led 38-24 at halftime and outscored Lordsburg every quarter. Lordsburg went 8 for 8 at the free throw line.
