Raymond Anzaldua of Animas tops the 40 acre field with an average of 9 622 pounds earning 500 dollars and a 150 dollar gift certificate from Ferry Morse. Clyde Richins of Richins Brothers collects 300 dollars as dealer and a 22 caliber rifle as sales award.
Lordsburg Mavericks led by David Garcia overcome Animas Panthers 61 60 as Garcia scores 17 and grabs seven rebounds. Animas top scorer James Bagwell nets 19. District race tightens with Lordsburg at 5 1. Upcoming two district games vs Reserve and Deming showcase high stakes.
School superintendent announces a two day Drug Abuse Workshop at the old junior high auditorium on Feb 3 and 4 starting at 1 30 p m. David Coch of the State Department of Education directs the program with a goal to curb student drug abuse. Parents and law officers and other interested persons are invited to attend.
The State Highway Department seeks bids for clearance work to ready Railroad Avenue in Lordsburg for reconstruction. Demolition and removal of existing improvements within the highway right of way, plus a new interchange and underpass at Highways 70 and 80, are planned with an information public hearing February 15 at 7 p.m. in the School cafetorium.
Hidalgo County and Lordsburg City officials met with State Civil Defense Office and University of New Mexico to plan civil defense training. The initial public training week of February 8 to 11 at the National Guard Armory will simulate a large scale emergency for city and county officials to gain coping experience. The UNM Civil Defense Program Staff will conduct the drills.
Western New Mexico University lists 168 students named to the Commendatory list for superior academic performance in Fall 1972. Requirements include at least 15 credit hours and a 3.0 GPA or higher. Lordsburg and Virden students named include Ladislao Berelleza Naomi L Whipple Elizabeth A Whipple Dan Van Schaemelhout Cheryl J Jones.
Sixty three students at Western New Mexico University completed degree requirements at the fall close and will receive their degrees at May commencement. Lordsburg candidates include Philip Harold Allen Frances Rose Clark Travis Henry Columbus and Connie Lou Kimbley with Elem Ed credentials.
A February 9 cotton mechanization workshop at the American Motor Inn invites all cotton producers gin ners and industry representatives. New Mexico State University extension agronomist W S Jackson says the program emphasizes mechanization management minimum tillage pesticide use weed control marketing and alternative crops. Special consultants include Lambert Wilkes Texas A M University Elmer Hudspeth USDA Lubbock and Lyle Carter USDA Shafter California.
The 7 1 Reading class at Dugan Tarango Middle School seeks names and addresses of Lordsburg residents in the armed forces to send monthly letters. People with relatives or friends serving are asked to submit names and addresses to the class to support local service members and share school life news.
On Tuesday March 7 filing closed for the municipal election. United Party headed by Mayor Betty H Lazar listed aldermen Alvarez Powell Harwood Harper Gomez Reed. Independent slate included Alan A Koff for mayor and Allen FiIe Noce Diaz Warren Orona. Incumbents Alvarez Harper Allen and judge candidates Richins Estrada Ramirez filed for office. Alderman posts require competition in each ward.
State Highway Department and New Mexico Environmental Improvement Agency arranged a relocation for a small hot mix plant to lessen dust near Lordsburg. The plant, rated at 40 tons of aggregates per hour, must meet permit terms placing it five miles from town and at least one mile from residences, with a new site five miles north on Highway 90 toward Silver City.
U S Rep Harold Runnels aide Rudy Valencia will visit the State Police office in the county sheriff's building in Lordsburg on Tuesday February 8 from 9 30 a m to noon. Residents may drop in to discuss federally sponsored projects or issues of concern.
