The Liberal announces a three show cooking school at the Palace Theatre offering free lectures and demonstrations starting February 21. The event blends home economics with a feature picture and free recipes, guests join in a real kitchen atmosphere with close ups and practical homemaking tips.
The new utility store run by R B Prugle Jiamond and W O Springer opens in the Lordsburg area next to Liberal offices on Pyramid Street. Prugle, an electrician with years in Lordsburg and Deming, leads the venture offering wiring and electrical services while Hammond and Springer, both gas operators, rely on a decade of experience. The shop plans to sell gas appliances and Sun-Ray ranges and heaters under strong field supervision.
Margaret McMillian of the Welfare Department will go Monday to pick up two American children for transfer to Carrie Tingley Hospital for Children. Mrs McMillian serves as Child Welfare Director in Public Welfare.
The construction of sidewalks will be resumed next Monday with about fifty workers. Assistant district engineer Joe Rogers says work will continue until all property owners who want sidewalks have them. Foreman R J Jarvis notes more than a mile of sidewalks already built.
Mr. and Mrs. Peter Crowley of Chicago joined Dr. and Mrs. C. B. Austin for a luncheon. Crowley is a Chicago contractor and a close friend of Mrs. Austin's brother, Tom McQueen, also a Chicago contractor.

Miss Ruth Fisher, a University of New Mexico student, spends the weekend with her parents Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Fisher.
Plans are finalized for Hidalgo County's birthday celebration finale on January 29 at the Palador with New Mexico State College Collegians. Tickets are selling well as the theatre phase becomes an annual event while a gym basketball game drew a large crowd in support of the celebration.
Dr. Robert E. Vinson traveled to Dallas to officiate the marriage of his daughter Kathryn Vinson to Richard Kimball of Cleveland. Mrs. Vinson had already gone ahead to prepare for the ceremony. The couple will reside in Cleveland after the wedding on February 29, and the Vinsons expect to return to Lordsburg around February 1.
Mr and Mrs Robert Pierce entertained theThursday Bridge club on January 20. Mrs Bennie Cochran and Joe Sullivan had high scores in the game. Frozen fruit salad ice box cookies and coffee were served to the guests including Mr and Mrs Glen Moses Mr and Mrs H F Scofield Mr and Mrs Marvin Pierce Mr and Mrs Joe Sullivan Mr and Mrs Bennie Cochran and the hosts.
Mrs. J. H. Clark entertained the Wednesday bridge club with a luncheon guest Mrs. Earle Kerr. Chicken croquets formed the main part of the tastily prepared meal shared by Mrs. C. B. Austin Mrs. R. E. Buvens Mrs. Harold Rolfe Mrs. E. J. Short Mrs. W. C. Downey Mrs. S. E. Allen, and hostess Mrs. J. H. Clark.

Film editors and reviewers name Life of Emile Zola by Warner Bros as the top choice in Film Daily ten best of 1937. The list also includes The Good Earth Captains Courageous The Lost Horizon A Star Is Born Romeo and Juliet Stage Door Dead End Winterset The Awful Truth. Palace Theatre manager Mrs Allen will show six titles this month with four remaining on February programs including dates for each film.
Lordsburg Players present Introducin Susan a comedy at the high school auditorium Monday night to benefit the Senior Class. Director Bryan Hall notes strong rehearsal and promises a smooth, well suited cast including Mrs Harold Scofield Mrs Thelma Ross Mixees Martha Shipe LoRee Kent Margaret Fuller and others. A record crowd is expected as Senior Class handles business and ticket sales.
Miss Velma Hill from Silver City spent Tuesday with her parents Mr and Mrs Albert Hill. She now serves as secretary to William Wilson of the NYA and District Engineer Joe Rogers notes she is among the region's most efficient federal service secretaries.
Holt of Carlsbad, seven years with the Gasoline Tax Division of the Bureau of Revenue, visited on official business. A long time resident for 38 years and 26 days, he earned the first Eddy county lease now Lea county, drove Carlsbad’s first automobile to a ranch, and owned Lea county’s first bath tub.
The F. E. Club gathered at Mrs. A. B. Bowman home on Wednesday for a birthday celebration for Mrs. J. H. Baxter. A single large wrapped gift from all members honored the guest. Guests received double green leaf blotters with jokes between leaves. Tart cherry pudding coffee and nut cups were served to the listed attendees.
Three 4-H meetings were held at Lordsburg grammar school with 6-Y and 7th grade girls progressing without a local leader. The Virden club drew 44 girls, led by Mia Lunt, embracing home projects foods sewing and clothing. Officers elected included MaryJorie Nelson president and Leanora Richins secretary. a children's clothing school with Miss Dee Maier from New Mexico A. and M. College is planned for April.
Mr and Mrs A Borenstein from Silver City visited Silver City Mine 0 Lee Forrester and Barney Borenstein for dinner at the Hidalgo Coffee Shop on Sunday.
State Policeman John Bradford Jr says the car and drivers licenses date is extended to February 4 1994. He requests cooperation to avoid penalties on that date. Licenses may be obtained at either of the Ports of Entry or at the Montague Townsend garage.
Miss Louise Wamel, after attending schools in Cincinnati and El Paso following Lordsburg high school, has been appointed to a secretarial position in the Bureau of Revenue at Santa Fe.
Mrs Claude Olney reads a letter from former resident Mrs Florence L Crocker living at 1722 West 83rd Street Los Angeles. She still cherishes the Pythian Sisters and attends a Methodist community church and Sunday School. Dr and Mrs Crocker were early Lordsburg church workers. he has passed on and she lives with sisters in LA.
Judge George W. Hay on a routine Lordsburg visit disposed of a large criminal docket with District Attorney Joseph W Hodges and Court Reporter Mrs. Margaret Estes present. The Virden youths pled guilty to thefts and received 2 to 3 year state prison terms, suspended with 46 days jail for Iamael Payne and 30 days for Tommy Watson and Sherman Jensen plus fines.
A special Friday meeting of the Missionary Society of the M E church, led by Mrs. Roy T Bonar, formed a single society to meet twice monthly. An enchilada supper is planned for Tuesday February 1 under the charge of Mrs R B Lundgren Mrs P M Chase and Mrs George Ewan with details to follow.
Word reached Bisbee Arizona of the death in Los Angeles of Mrs Elizabeth Scott mother of Mrs Clarence Wittig. An aunt of Mrs Wittig, Mrs H L Scofield, and others traveled to Bisbee for the funeral and visited friends and relatives in Douglas and Hinabe.
The entry vestibule at the Lordsburg library improves heating and usability. Mrs Mathilde Johnson notes the reading room remains comfortably heated. The library gains new improvements including a ready scrap book for Hidalgo county news and Lordsburg items awaiting filing.
Christian Endeavor notes twenty five present last Sunday evening. Next Sunday the topic is The Church Needs Us led by Beatrice Madero with Helen Brimberry guiding a discussion. All young people aged ten and up invited to attend at 6:30 p m in a new room. Older folks may listen.
Dr. and Mrs. Frank L. Norris of Kirksville Missouri and Miss Clara Norris of Galesburg Illinois visited Dr. and Mrs. J. H. Baxter this week.
Lordsburg Lions and Chamber of Commerce debated paving streets at a Tuesday lunch meeting. WPA engineer Joe Rogers outlined funding needs, proposed triple asphalt penetration, and cited a $16,000 appropriation to start work, with city council as sponsor and bond options uncertain.
Judge J N Sanford of Cloverdale writes the Hidalgo county Cloverdale region is nearly out of the state due to roads. He notes 160 voters are barred from the county seat by the bad highway from Cloverdale to Animas and cites fifty miles to the nearest county official.

Mr and Mrs Claude Olney departed Tuesday morning for Lubbock Texas to conduct business.
Mrs Clem Smith known as Mis. Tommy Gee hosts a shower in her honor with Mrs B M McWhorter as hostess. A long guest list includes Mrs R C Atkinson and many others. Miss Atkinson’s daughter entertained with a reading. Refreshments of coffee tea sandwiches and cookies were served.
Mr and Mrs Hugh Garrett and Billie of Steing visited the H E Scofields over the weekend. The note mentions the social call and family visitors in a local society brief.
