Public guidance outlines how many exemptions individuals may claim for 1955 income tax. Each exemption is a $600 deduction, totaling $690 tax free. Rules cover self, spouse in joint or separate returns, age 65 or blindness, widow or widower status, dependents, and filing requirements for dependents under 19 or full-time students. Proof of age blindness may be requested.
Lordsburg High School freshmen defeated Silver City freshmen 42 to 31 Tuesday evening. N Ruiz led Lordsburg with 13 points while a Ruiz on Silver City scored 9 to lead their team.
District Director Marcus T. Neely of INS reminds area aliens that tomorrow is the deadline to file the 1956 Address Report under the 1952 act. He notes all aliens except diplomatic staff must submit at the nearest post office or INS office during January. penalties include fines or deportation for noncompliance. Last year about 40,879 reports were filed in the area.
Janice Malott was installed as Worthy Advisor of the Rainbow for Girls at a public ceremony in the Masonic Hall on Sunday afternoon January 22. Also installed were officers including Quannah Cox Associate Worthy Advisor Nancy Pat Godfrey Charity and several others. Her family presented a white Rainbow Bible as she chose a scripture, with songs performed in her honor.
The Lordsburg Mavericks split a weekend pair, winning one and losing to Cobre 49 to 47. Cobre seized a late lead as Galician freshman scored four quick points, but Lordsburg fell short after a disputed timeout and a late long shot by Oscar Diaz was ruled invalid. Coach Smith cited Benny Williams’ absence and height as factors in a poorly officiated contest.
The PTA sponsors the Tom Sawyer production at Lawton High School on February 6. Presented by Lawton Players, additional details appear in Liberal next week. A must see on your schedule.
A cake walk will be held at the VFW Hall on Saturday January 28 at 2 PM. Proceeds go to the March of Dimes. Sponsored by Lordsburg Post 3099 Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary.
The 1956 Mother's March of Dimes closes Monday January 30 with a porch light on appeal from 7 to 8 pm. Mrs Bob Williams heads the effort and has named captains including Mary Mullins Phyllis Murray Mildred Atkinson Cecila Gondra Yeuton Ray Mary Gay and June Hill. Funds will be turned in at the Legion Hall and coffee and doughnuts will be served to volunteers.
Lordsburg will host a Parade of Antique and Classic Automobiles on Saturday January 26 as part of the March of Dimes. The event features four national car clubs coordinating a Pony Express style tour with donations benefiting polio efforts. Cars will be displayed at Hidalgo garage overnight with a paid admission supporting the March of Dimes.
Wesleyan Singers present a 8 P M recital on January 27 at the Methodist Church with no admission charge. Baritone soloist Dean Wochner will perform Ballad for Americans. Ray Harrington, formerly of Lordsburg and now in Anthony, visited Lordsburg recently.
Lordsburg outlines fund raising for the March of Dimes with a Walt Disney Prince Valiant show at Coronado Theatre January 26 and 27. Shows start at 1 PM with proceeds donated. Lions Club collects Sunday to Tuesday. drive ends January 30.
Twenty four 4 H leaders and club presidents met January 23 in the Hidalgo County courthouse with county agents Eva Thomas and Ed Hitson and State Leader Tiny Faye Jones to organize a governing 4 H Council. The council will include leaders assistants junior leaders one member from each club superintendent of schools representatives from extension club and Farm Bureau plus a business and publicity man to unite and guide 4 H activities.
The Lordsburg Deming game moves from Friday January 3 to Thursday February 2 in Deming. Players and fans are asked to note the new kickoff time.
