Snowstorm Brings Heavy Snow to District Roads

A major snowstorm blankets the region with about an inch on the ground at most, four to five inches on the Lordsburg to Silver City route, delaying traffic between Lordsburg and Deming. Roads are in poor condition and drivers are urged to use chains and proceed with care. Cobre school reportedly closed for the day.

Animas Valley Soil Conservation District Organized in 1945

The Animas Valley Soil Conservation District was organized in November 1945. It lies in Hidalgo County and Grant County and covers 998,017 acres, with 439,939 acres of agricultural land. Joe Rouse chairs the District Board of Supervisors and County ASC Committee, operating a ranch south of Lordsburg. Max DeVilbiss serves as secretary treasurer and ranches at Animas, alongside Archie Payne and Leland Stewart. Jim Wilburn, a rancher from Rodeo, NM, is the remaining board member. Meetings average about four per year with four members present. The Lordsburg schools serve both this and Virden Valley districts. Continued on page 7.

Tax Rules on Dependents Under 19 Full Time Students

The text explains dependency deduction rules for children under 19 or full time students over 19. If you provide more than half of their support, you may claim them as a dependent even with earnings up to $600 in 1955. Students may file returns for refunds or exemptions, and spouses or scholarships do not affect the dependency unless the student marries.

Football Lynx Bobbie Stages Night Tour At Stadium

Bobbie the Paul Probert family lynx took a moonlit stroll last Friday night after an open front door. The pet displays unusual skills such as bath use and powder application while showing evident loyalty to the football program. The scene unfolds around the stadium where she slept and may seek season pass or mascot status.

CAP notice postpones weekend SARCAP mission

The CAP simulated search mission scheduled for this weekend has been postponed due to the weather outlook. The new date for the SARCAP will be announced later.

Lordsburg Deming Basketball Game Postponed

Snow bound roads and bad weather force the postponement of the Lordsburg Mavericks versus Deming Wildcats basketball game set for Thursday February 2 on Deming's floor. Referees from Las Cruces could not travel, delaying the contest to early next week.

Local Methodist Church Expands Property Holdings

The Lordsburg First Methodist Church purchased the Alek Spiro duplex and two adjacent lots, gaining a full quarter block for church use. Crowded conditions at the Chased School prompted the expansion drive, with over $40,000 pledged and $5,000 paid. A Sunday supper on February 5 will discuss future plans for the church and school, including space for Sunday School classes and Children’s Division.

Cake Walk by V F W and Auxiliary Raises 18.65

The V.F.W. and its auxiliary held a cake walk last Saturday. Proceeds of 18.65 went to the March of Dimes. Special thanks to participants and to the auxiliary women who baked the cakes.

Annual Operating Loans Available To Farmers In Hidalgo County

Farmers in Hidalgo County may apply for additional funds to cover 1954 operating expenses. Loans target family-type farms unable to secure credit elsewhere and may be used for fertilizer, tractor fuel, livestock feed, and seed. Applications are filed at the Hidalgo County Farmers Home Administration office in La Arizona.
