Hidalgo County hospital funded for two more months

Hidalgo County Commissioners approved a $50,000 emergency loan to keep the hospital open for two months. $37,000 will cover outstanding debts from the last 11 months, with the remainder for salaries. Hospital staff cited cash-only payments and large bad debts, including over $52,000 written off since June, while about $80,000 remained collectible.

Moon Voyager Delivers Strong Socorro Chamber Speech

Harrison Schmitt, former moon voyager and candidate, received a warm reception at the Socorro Chamber of Commerce awards banquet as he showed slides from Apollo 17. Judy Fisher Seeks Hidalgo County Treasurer Nomination

Lordsburg resident Judy Fisher announces Democratic bid for Hidalgo County treasurer in the June primary. She currently serves as deputy treasurer under Martha Harvell after seven years in that role and four years as county treasurer. Fisher chairs the Hidalgo County Democratic Central Committee and holds posts in Beta Sigma Phi and St. Joseph's Church.

Phelps Dodge Plant Pays Big County Property Taxes

The Hidalgo County treasury collected more than 550000 in property taxes from the Phelps Dodge plant at Playas. Funds will be allocated to the county's two school districts under the state funding formula.

Legislature Eyes New Judgeship For Sixth District

The governor’s budget for the 32nd New Mexico Legislature proposes funds for an extra judgeship in the Sixth Judicial District to ease Judge Norman Hodges workload. The post would cover salary, secretary, court reporter, and office furnishings starting Jan 1, 1977, with DA Dave Serna among potential candidates. The report cites 1,318 cases closed in 1974, long travel across Grant Hidalgo and Luna counties, and rising civil and criminal caseloads from 1972 to 1974.

Celebration planned for arrival of wagon train in Lordsburg

Plans are finalized for Bicentennial Wagon Train arrival in Lordsburg on February 11. The train crosses the Arizona New Mexico border February 8 at Rodeo, camps near Road Forks February 9, and arrives in Lordsburg late February 10. Activities include breakfast, barbecue, style shows, singing, dancing, window decorations, and bicentennial costumes. Wagon train chairs Gordon Cory and Mrs. Gayle Kipp invite community ideas.
