Dave Serna Hidalgo Luna and Grant Counties district attorney was chosen secretary treasurer of the New Mexico State District Attorneys Association at a full day Albuquerque meeting. Debates focused on a proposed state code for public release of information in criminal cases with Serna backing a code to curb publicity. Some officials, including Alexander Sceresse of Albuquerque, opposed any code preferring case by case handling. The Liberal urges restraint on press gag rules and questions constitutionality.

Mavericks Rally Past Animas Panthers In Home Win
Lordsburg Mavericks beat Animas Panthers 1 53 as Ruben Baisa scored 20 and Art Talavera grabbed 10 rebounds. The Mavericks then lost to Cobre 65 46 at Cobre. Ruben Bassa led with 18 points while Richard Perez had 11 for the Indians. The Mavericks’ B team won 100 28 over Animas then lost 55 51 to Cobre. John R. Robertson Named Acting Lordsburg Postmaster
John R. Robertson, a Lordsburg native since 1937, was named acting postmaster after the dismissal of Donald A. McGhee. Robertson, 47, recently worked as a field auditor for the Bureau of Revenue and has six years as a post office employee plus time as county clerk. He is married with a son and two daughters and is a veteran of World War I and the Korean War.

City council last Thursday ordered immediate removal of encroachments on Highway 80 within five feet of the right of way as required to resubmit the project to the Bureau of Public Roads. Mrs. Ben R. Myers 76 longtime operator of the Myers Motel died January 11 in Safford after a long illness. Survived by husband Ben R. Myers Sr of Willcox, son Ben R. Myers Jr of Placentia, daughters Elaine Middleton Galveston and Pansy Stubbs El Paso, three grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Services in Willcox with burial in Little Field Texas.

Tractor Accident Claims Life Of Glenn Shumway
Glenn Shumway 61 died when his tractor overturned on a farm two miles north of Lordsburg while plowing an earthen dike. Don Dolle found the scene about 1 40 p.m. after locating no one at the house. Funeral services set for Thursday and burial Friday in Taylor Arizona. survivors include his wife two daughters and one son.

Rep Kirk To Leave For Legislature Session
Carter W Kirk newly elected representative from Hidalgo and Luna Counties visits Lordsburg and says he is leaving for the opening session in Santa Fe. The Legislature convenes January 17 with address by Governor Cargo. He can be reached by mail or telephone at the New Legislative Building. He invites Hidalgo County residents to share views on legislation and will forward copies of bills to the County Clerk, this paper, and the Chamber of Commerce.
