A reflective note from Lordsburg Internment Camp urges inmates to leave 1942 behind and enter 1943 with kindness and resolve. It emphasizes honesty, perseverance, and faith, urging individuals to find or make a path through hardship and to seek a hopeful, steadfast approach under God's watchful eye.
Montday evening at the officers club a cocktail party was hosted by Coal Louis A Ledbetter in honor of Lt Col and Mrs James Parker recently assigned to Lordsburg Internment Camp as an executive officer and visiting Col and Mrs Norman Fiske. A buffet supper was served to the entire officer personnel and their wives.
American soldiers in Lordsburg Teeland Africa, the South Pacific, and beyond celebrated Christmas Day with turkey oysters hot rolls and plentiful vegetables. Letters cards and packages arrived as halls sparkled with garlands and a large evergreen tree stood watch over gifts. Santa Claus appeared while officers and enlisted, guided by Lt. Wegner and Capt. Balch, adorned the club with tinsel under the supervision of Mesdames Winkler Eirsman Burton and Lynn.
The Lordsburg Internment Camp held its first Yale pageant on December 24 at 4 p.m. under Mrs. R. S. Dockum’s direction. Officers enlisted men and families acted in a Nativity scene with Evelyn Leevey guiding as an angel and J. L. Balch as Joseph, featuring a full choir and Santa Claus portrayed by Capt. Warren.
A Christmas Day dinner at the Officers Club featured oyster soup turkey ham and pies with Col Louis A Ledbetter presiding. Guests included Lt Cols and Captains with Mrs Churchill coordinating the plum pudding fire while Pfc William Pape carried in the large flaming cherry pudding.
Morris Weller and Lt Edward J Watson presided as officers of the club Christmas Day. A large group gathered around the tree as Lt E W Mitchell made presentations. Sgt J B Moore received a large Vala Pak travelling case, and several boys were given leather bill folds. Co E Embrey presented a Yanky Clipper Session Clock to the Officers' Club on December 25, with officers expressing deep appreciation.
Capt Cary L Whitmarsh received a Christmas present December 26 his promotion to major. Lt and Mrs C H Dater of Dallas arrived in Lordsburg December 24 and Lt Dater is assigned to compound No 3 at the Internment Camp. Sgt and Mrs J B Moore left for Pueblo December 26 on a ten day leave to visit relatives.
Captain H. C. Stull arrived back in Lordsburg on Monday following a short visit to California.
Sgt Philp Armijo steps in to plan and prepare officers' meals during Sgt J B Moore's leave. Born January 22 1916 in Socorro New Mexico Army Jo as nicknamed by friends. Armijo prior eight years as chef across the country including Gal lup EF Rancho Harvey House White Cafe Santa Rita and Palace Cafe Silver City. He joined the M P detachment eight months ago and was transferred to the officers club at Sgt Moore's request. Armijo plans to start his own business after the war buoyed by his jovial disposition and business sense. Lieoyd C Kim a U S Justice Bureau of Immigration employee and Chinese citizen visited the camp last week. He has worked in the Texas district office since leaving Lordsburg camp and will soon depart for New York City to continue service for Uncle Sam.
Three hundred Christian Japanese gathered for a Christmas program in Compound No %. Under Protestant minister Paul Osumi they exchanged gifts and enjoyed the traditional observance.
A. L. Bonner of the Medical Detachment departed December 25 for Officers Training School at Fort Benning. His wife accompanied him to Houston and will stay with her mother until his return.
Sgt. and Mrs. W E Markwort and children returned Monday after a ten day visit to Temple Texas where they visited their parents.
Despite heavy rain the Christmas bingo party in the Recreation Hall drew a large turnout. Attendees enjoyed a buffet supper of hot chocolate sandwiches cookies fruit and candy before a dance with music from a splendid orchestra.
The 81 foot submarine captured at Pearl Harbor tours California towns as part of the U S Treasury War Savings campaign. It travels on a giant trailer with escort by patrols and bands, raising funds and public interest amid a historic overland voyage.
The event featured an army personnel ensemble with Edna Noble on piano and Sgt David Mazolla on accordion. Hosts included Ist Sgt Bryan Perrett and others while bingo numbers were called by Pvt James Latison and companions. The arrangement team listed Lt H C Brinkeeter and Mrs O J Smart with Sgt W L Ackerman.
The wives of the enlisted men gave Mrs. C. J. Smart a poinsettia for Christmas. The gift was presented by Mrs. J. R. Poindexter for the committee, with Mesdames Earl Leevey Bryan Perrett W. J. Ackerman and H. C. Malone.
Lt. and Mrs. J. F. Redford and their son Jimmy of Brownwood Texas spent Christmas week in Lordsburg with Mr. and Mrs. Homer Brooks, the parents of Mrs. Redford.
Major and Mrs Churchill hosted a Tuesday dinner with a warm fire and candlelight. Guests included Col. and Mrs. N. E. Fiske and Lt. Col. and Mrs. James Parker. Mrs. Fiske departed for California Wednesday. Col. Fiske will return to Louisiana. Ellen Capps
Miss Jessie M. Woodbridge daughter of Huntsville Arkansas and Robert H Hubbard of Deming New Mexico wed at the First Christian Church Deming on December 19 Rev Francis Wheeler officiating Relatives attended The bride wore navy with red and white accessories and carried white chrysanthemum corsage The couple honeymooned in Las Cruces and will work in Luna Hidalgo counties and at Deming respectively
War Department notified Mr and Mrs R R Gale that their son Sergeant Arvil L Gale is held by Japanese in the Philippine Islands. Mr and Mrs Tom Cox of Se par were informed their son Lieutenant Tommy Cox is a prisoner in the Philippines.
Fred C Kerr of Lordsburg graduates from Harlingen Army Gunnery School Texas as Gunner Sergeant after five weeks of training and is assigned to a bomber crew. He qualified as an expert aerial gunner and will join a combat crew to defend the bomber and attack enemy targets. He studied aircraft identification sight harmonization and weaponry from BH to 60 caliber guns.
Herbert N Hardin died suddenly Monday at 10 45 p m at his Texas Street home after a short illness. Born in Lordsburg August 2 1897 he lived most of his life here. Survived by his mother Mrs Minnie Conner Hardin a brother Millard Charles Mardin and several uncles and aunts. Funeral held Wednesday at Heather Funeral Home with Rev Percy Krewson delivering a Psalm 39 message. Burial at Mountain View Cemetery.
Billy Poindexter, who ferried planes to South Africa, arrived in the United States last week. He traveled from Memphis to El Paso, joined his wife in Silver City, and visited Lordsburg with his parents. The Poindexter family shared Christmas dinner with relatives before Poindexter resumed duties in the air force.
The family expresses sincere appreciation for kind deeds and floral offerings received after their bereavement.
Tom Clayton president of the New Mexico Cattle Growers Association says the executive committee votes to delay the third quarterly board meeting from January in Santa Fe to the evening before the annual convention in Albuquerque in March 1948. The annual date will be announced in January.
Adolfo Fito Acosta William Robert McMinn Guadalupe Quevedo Varela Francisco Rodriguez Martinez Armando Morales all of Lordsburg and Ramon Diaz Montes of Central and Ascencion Jimenez Garcia of Duncan have been inducted into the army at Ft. Bliss. Oren Moffett Jones and Jack Jesse Cole of Lordsburg remained at Ft. Bliss not returning on furlough.
Miss Opal Virginia Wright daughter of Mr and Mrs Edmund Wright married Pvt Gerald Hunt at noon on December 31 in the Wright home before relatives. Rev F R Ponge officiated. Attendants were the bride’s sister Isabel Wright and Sgt H H Atkinson. The couple plans a honeymoon near San Bernardino where the groom’s mother has a cabin, then return to Lordsburg Internment Camp after 11 days furlough.
An army aircraft crashed Wednesday night near here after the pilots bailed out to safety. Officers report the investigation is underway and will release updates as they become available.
Lt Col James Parker joins our headquarters staff from Houston where he commanded the 744th MP Battalion now under Col Landy. Mrs Parker accompanies him as they seek a downtown residence. James Parker Jr serves as a flying service lieutenant while a younger son attends the University of Texas. An addition will be made to headquarters to accommodate the increased office staff under Col Ledbetter.
December 20, 142 Lordsburg New Mexico expresses thanks to the Lordsburg Chapter of the American Red Cross for excellent cooperation with the Station Hospital staff and patients. The message honors democratic unity and shared effort toward final victory.
8. M. Chase, former Worshipful Master of Lordsburg Lodge No. 30 F and AM, installs his son Peter M. Chase as Worshipful Master. Other officers named include W. M. Peter M. Chase, W. M. Sam H. Gasu, J. Wed. Le Augustine, D.C L. Brown, J. Di. M. Chase, Tyler George Trimble, Secretary Geo. P. Joffus, Treasurer T. FE. Hall.
Mrs. Sarah Simpson received word from the Adjutant General in Washington that her grandson, Sergeant Donald H. Kedzie, is a Japanese prisoner of war in the Philippines. A follow up letter with more details is expected.
Mrs. Dorothy D. Hunter manager of the U S Employment Service in Silver City and interviewer Charles Ponto appear at Hotel Hidalgo on federal labor business. They announce they will return the first or third Tuesday of each month for meetings and reports.
Mr and Mrs S E Allen and their sons James and Dick with Miss Jo anne Simmons and Misa Opal La spent Christmas in El Ano.
