W H Small says the bid by Jack Heather was second, Richard Tatsch third, and the lowest bid only 65 dollars lower than the next. Total cost, including a $3,000 rear warehouse, is announced at $14,435 with local labor preferred. Frank Kline and Von Rodic returned yesterday from a prospecting trip in Arizona.
On February 12 Miss Charlotte Hamlin of Tucson and Ray Willis of Phoenix wed at the Christian parsonage with Rev. T. A. Phillips officiating. Attending were the bride’s brother and wife Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Hamlin of Tucson.
The report notes Commissioner J. H. McLeod attending U S district court in Santa Fe as a juror. A Women's Club meeting is set for Monday at 2 30 p m at Mrs Chas Fuller’s home. Mrs Ben Robertson and her children were in town Wednesday from Cloverdale.
Three student groups prepared and served lunches at low cost with menus including Banana Salad and Pimento Cheese Bandwiches. Fuehiladas and oranges. Cabbage Salad and Pineapple sauce cake. Costs ranged from 12 to 17 cents per plate.
A Monday morning assembly at ten featured Dr Allison the Albuquerque District Methodist Church leader Dr George Hammond New Mexico anti saloon league superintendent and Baron Auriemma also known as Happy Jim Each gave talks with Hammond addressing Progress and receiving enthusiastic reaction Auriemma spoke of Salvation Army work sang with Mrs Claude Fuller and led students in Springtime In The Rockies He also performed later at Central school for Central and Wilson students.
Last Friday the Home Ec class hosted a cake tasting judged by the Cooking class. Ruth Wallace’s cake drew praise as the sampler enjoyed a generous slice, while all cakes were described as delicious and cost about twenty cents each.
The Girls Inter-class Basketball Tournament concluded last Saturday with the Sophomores, winners of the first half, meeting the Freshmen, champions of the second half, in a fast title game. Both teams showed strong determination as the Frosh opened the contest in the first quarter.
Co. L. Brown has been re-appointed a member of the state Board of Barber Examiners where he has served as president since its organization He is in Santa Fe to attend a meeting of the board.
Word reached Lordsburg hospital of the death of Mrs R Drake mother of Mrs Pete Kiew who was injured weeks ago in an accident wreck. Mr Kiewt was able to travel to El Paso this week where he met his brother Ralph president of the Kiewit Bons Company of Omaha who accompanied him back to Lordsburg
The High School Glee Club and Director W. C. Mearns receive credit for the strong three act musical comedy Mies Cherryblossom staged Tuesday evening. Nadim Causland stars in the title role with Basil Fuller excelling in heavy comedy parts and other cast members including Warren Fuller Marquis Smith Malcolm Barton Harold Brown Louise Laurinas Linda Hollingsworth and the Gresha Girls praised. Local visitors Mr and Mrs Merritt Kelly and daughter attended.
General John J. Pershing visited Lordsburg for a luncheon with Willard Holt of the Chamber of Commerce and spoke with Major Harry Mosenstein and other locals about ex-service men carrying identification cards. He received carved yucca canes from Albert Johnson, plans to visit Fort Huachuca, and may return east to be Grand Marshal at President Romer’s inauguration.
Mitzi Green debuts a sequence of famous models in the show, as the RKO film Little Orphan Annie screens at the Theatre on February 21 and 22. May Robson Mirei head the cast with Buster Phelps Edgar Kennedy Kate Lawson and more, directed by John Robertson.
Message to County Treasurer Kerr from Lordsburg New Mexico. Governor signs bill providing for full settlement of principal taxes due for 1932 and earlier years. Receipts issued upon payment within 90 days plus court costs but no interest or penalties. County clerk advised on court costs. state tax commission expects publicity to boost collections.
Baron James V. Auriemma known as Sunny Jim returned for the fourteenth year to lead a charitable drive. He sang at the church and in public schools and at the Lions Club before leaving Sunday with $168.75 raised to benefit the Salvation Army. Local officers include W. E. Holt as president and G. L. Ross as secretary treasurer.
Western star Ken Maynard, beloved by fans, drops in at Lordsburg Airport to visit Sgt and Mrs. Hurley Jones and join in a screening of Sunset Trail with local supporters. He expresses fondness for Lordsburg and enjoys cowboy music from local fiddlers.
The Horticultural Department announces reduced prices on Chinese Elm trees for 6 to 8 feet and 8 to 10 feet sizes with five to ten cent freight from Las Cruces via pooled orders. County Agent coordinates pools. call Court House or Agent’s home to place orders at once for February shipment.
The Parent Teacher Association schedules a meeting for February 20 with a student program including Little Shoomaker and other classroom performances. The display will feature work from all grades and a competition awarding a class with the most parental turnout. A March 9 tax assistance session will be held in Lordsburg for filing 1932 income tax returns. visit Hidalgo Hotel. Former Commissioner Tom Pendleton and wife visited from Cloverdale.
A major road program led by A. O. Peabody aims to finish by late May or early June. N. W. McCluskey and O. G. Cronvenor supervise a 28 foot graded road with a 20 foot drive, cement culverts, and elimination of dips. Lee Moor’s contractor M. R. Smith pledges local labor use with help from Eugene Montague and area officials.
The school board election was very quiet with 130 votes cast. Mrs H. Gass received 124, Mr Blackburn 119, and Mrs Conner 117. The election board included B. B. Ownby H. H. Shelly and P J Pair ly, with G. W. Gephart and Marvin Bradberry as clerks.
Ohio State University faculty member and North Central Association inspector Dr. B. H. Stradley visited Lordsburg early in the week. He studied the Chamber of Commerce picture gallery of American notables and then drove to BilVer City to inspect State Teachers College as a North Central member.
JH Rolfe proprietor of Molfe Service Station announces a modern garage opening in connection with his camp and station. The shop will specialize in Buick six repairs and offer body work fender repair and auto painting. Young Rolfe has years of experience in the trade.
Senator Lee Brown Atwood criticized colleagues for not speeding up beneficial bills. He warned the state risks being called playboys or fireflies for failing to send enough measures to the governor. He spoke as a chief speaker on a KOB program tied to the V. F. W. event in Albuquerque.
Mayor Rosenstein says Lordsburg faces gloom but Pacific coast cities show harder hits. He notes merchants prefer small regional communities for business and reminds the council did not promise the city marshal post to any candidate. the winner of the constable election takes the job.
