A large Saturday crowd packed the Lordsburg bakery for its grand opening. Local officials conducted a prize drawing with Evelyn selecting a winning ticket, Ray Lester receiving the grand prize, and several attendees recognized for their participation.

A local unit of the Women’s Temperance Union will observe Frances Willard Day with a service on February 13 at 7 30 PM in memory of Mrs E J Wood. The program includes a framed Willard picture sale and a Willard quotation from her 1893 prophetic speech about temperance and moral impact.

Tax on Lubricating Oil Bill Introduced by R. H. Wamel

Viative R. H. Wamel advocates a bill imposing four cents per gallon excise tax on lubricating oils sold in original packages except interstate commerce. Each district would pay 25 dollars and retailers 5 dollars annually with tax collected by officers and deposited to the state treasury for the free text book fund.

Speaker Introduces Act Fixing Court Terms in Home District

Alvan N White introduces a bill to fix regular court terms for the sixth judicial district. Grant County sessions begin first Mondays in March and September. Luna County opening dates are third Mondays in April and October. Hidalgo County begins first Mondays in April and October. Catron County sits first Mondays in February and August. Sage Purchases Lordsburg Liberal to Form Deming Headlight Group

Sage, owner of the Deming Headlight, buys the Lordsburg Liberal which merged the Duncan Mountain Eagle. He will take control February 13 with P M McInnis becoming editor and manager of the merged papers. Major Sage is a New Mexico National Guard officer. After this week The Liberal’s direction shifts to Mr Bage.

Library Notes from February Library Board Meeting

The Jegulay Library Board met at the library on Monday February 6 with President Mrs Claude C Puller and Librarian Mrs I C Conner in attendance. January circulation reached 1465 books and 202 magazines with free cards issued through February 1. One new donation from Daniel Dunagan titled Channing Coming Thru by Seltzer is noted and a full list of new books will be released next week.

Mrs Downey Submits to a Minor Operation

Mrs W C Downey underwent a minor operation at Lordsburg Hospital Sunday morning. The procedure was successful and she is progressing rapidly. Her room is filled with flowers as a sign of affection from friends. Highway contractor A O Peabody plans to spend considerable time here to supervise the work.
