A large Saturday crowd packed the Lordsburg bakery for its grand opening. Local officials conducted a prize drawing with Evelyn selecting a winning ticket, Ray Lester receiving the grand prize, and several attendees recognized for their participation.
A local unit of the Women’s Temperance Union will observe Frances Willard Day with a service on February 13 at 7 30 PM in memory of Mrs E J Wood. The program includes a framed Willard picture sale and a Willard quotation from her 1893 prophetic speech about temperance and moral impact.
Viative R. H. Wamel advocates a bill imposing four cents per gallon excise tax on lubricating oils sold in original packages except interstate commerce. Each district would pay 25 dollars and retailers 5 dollars annually with tax collected by officers and deposited to the state treasury for the free text book fund.
Alvan N White introduces a bill to fix regular court terms for the sixth judicial district. Grant County sessions begin first Mondays in March and September. Luna County opening dates are third Mondays in April and October. Hidalgo County begins first Mondays in April and October. Catron County sits first Mondays in February and August. The measure targets the speaker’s home district, promising smooth passage.
Lordsburg attracts travelers and notable guests as high grade auto tourists detain for repairs. Don Marquis recently stayed in the town, boosting its profile. Edwin B Layman and daughter Eleanor of San Diego enjoy a weeklong visit after a cross country US tour. Oscar Allen posts bond as Constable of district No 1 with extended duties as city Marshal per council agreement.
Lordsburg fans look to Friday clash with Viren Eagles and Saturday meeting with Silver City Celta after a season opening setback to both. Coach Arnold’s junior high saw Central New Mexico’s team prevail 16 to 4.
Sage, owner of the Deming Headlight, buys the Lordsburg Liberal which merged the Duncan Mountain Eagle. He will take control February 13 with P M McInnis becoming editor and manager of the merged papers. Major Sage is a New Mexico National Guard officer. After this week The Liberal’s direction shifts to Mr Bage.
The Jegulay Library Board met at the library on Monday February 6 with President Mrs Claude C Puller and Librarian Mrs I C Conner in attendance. January circulation reached 1465 books and 202 magazines with free cards issued through February 1. One new donation from Daniel Dunagan titled Channing Coming Thru by Seltzer is noted and a full list of new books will be released next week.
A posthumous Amarillo Texas story shown as The Last Mile depicting a young man’s life and waiting death. The work, published by his family after the electrocution, is staged at the Palace Theatre on February 16 and 17.
Mrs W C Downey underwent a minor operation at Lordsburg Hospital Sunday morning. The procedure was successful and she is progressing rapidly. Her room is filled with flowers as a sign of affection from friends. Highway contractor A O Peabody plans to spend considerable time here to supervise the work.
The weekly church schedule lists worship at 11 with Pastor Wells, Sunday school at 10, a children’s story at 2, and an evening service at 7 18 led by Miss Billingsley. A revival attracted modest crowds but raised spirits. Rev. Smith plans returns. Friday sewing club reports a Feb 3 gathering at Mrs. Day’s with many members. Feb 10 meets at Mrs. Kunz’s to collect castoff clothing for the needy plus sewing work sessions.
Col J P Cody of Cody Wyoming and his wife visited Lordsburg praising its healthful climate. He compared it to Camp Cody Deming and cited 69 sick rate at Camp Cody against higher rates elsewhere. Manager and Mrs. Gammon entertain at the Midales Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Washburn from El Paso attend with their two daughters Francis Anne and Roberts. Roberts witnesses the first snow storm. Mr. Washburn manages the Gateway Motel in El Paso and is part of the Gateway Chain.
Representative Wamel and two colleagues introduced a bill in the state legislature to provide free textbooks for students from first through eighth grade in public schools. The measure seeks to ease burdens on families and ensure access to classroom reading materials.
Word reached here that Wade B. Smith, well known engineer, shot his foot while cleaning a rifle. The injury was severe enough that the foot had to be removed above the ankle. Local reaction called it mighty tough luck for a good man.
Claude B. Jernigan of Telma New Mexico and Rosie Chapmel of Fred Fock New Mexico wed at the Baptist church with M. D. Moore officiating They plan to live on a ranch near Steins in a home shortly after the ceremony.
Presiding Elder of the Albuquerque District Rev FE Allison will lead morning and evening services at the Methodist Church. Sunday includes Sunday School at 9 45 and Young Peoples service at 6 30. Quarterly Conference follows evening service. Mark's Life of Jesus class meets Tuesday at 7 30.
Mrs. W. C. Downey shows improvement after operation. Mr. E. L. Hancock left the hospital Wednesday. Mr. O. P. Cole is improving. Mr. Kiewit is up and around and improving steadily. Mrs. E. EB. Liddy left the hospital Tuesday.
