County election deadlines and voting changes outlined

Emmet Scofield warns that March 5 p.m. is the closing date for new registrations to vote in the municipal primary. Filing for county and village offices now requires a notarized form from the clerk. Voting machines will be used for the first time in Animas and Virden precincts, with two additional machines purchased for these locations.

Ida Wallace Dies in Lordsburg Silver City Notice

Mrs Ida Williams Wallace aged 62 died in Silver City after a year long illness. Funeral services were held February 5 at Heather Chapel with Rev W C officiating. Survived by two daughters Hazel Ellison and Grace Merritt two sons Boyd and Lloyd a nephew list includes Ralph Craig and Will Craig a niece list includes Opal Allen and Jeanette Spence two grandchildren Pricilla Downing and Dave Williams burial at Mountain View Cemetery near her husband.

Mobile Dental Unit Serves Lordsburg Students

The Mobile Dental Unit visited Lordsburg Municipal School on January 14 to 29 providing dental care to 366 children. Operated by the New Mexico Division of Dental Public Health under the Parent-Teacher Association, the program relied on volunteer workers led by Mrs. James Briggs and Mrs. Helen Med Medina.

Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber Banquet Set for Feb 17

The Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce will host its annual banquet Monday February 17 at 7 p m in the high school cafetorium. Ellsworth Green Jr executive VP and GM of the El Paso Chamber will be the guest speaker. Tickets available from the chamber office or directors. must be purchased by February 15.

Bank Robbery Arrest Praised by FBI for Lordsburg Officers

The FBI commends Lordsburg Police for quick identification and rapid capture of James Edward France, who robbed the First National Bank of Lordsburg on January 15, 1914. Officer Juan Moralez is highlighted for locating the suspect's whereabouts, with praise also extended to Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police for teamwork.

Mrs Croom Dies In Lordsburg Area Funeral Held

Mrs Mary Ethel Rose Croom died February 3 in Lordsburg. Funeral services were held February 5 in Heather Chapel with Rev. W. C Strickland officiating. Born November 8, 1875 in Victoria Texas she married John A Croom in 1891 in Vance Texas. They moved west by wagon. Eight children were born. six survive. Survivors include three daughters Mrs Mattie R Le Fevre of Tolar Texas Mrs Mary A Adams of Animas and Mrs Lelia Mae Isaacks of Willcox Ariz and three sons Joe D Frank and Lewis of Animas. Also ten grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. Burial in Middle Animas. Pallbearers were grandsons.

Hospital Levy on Tuesday for Hidalgo General Hospital

Registered voters in Hidalgo County may vote next Tuesday in a special election on applying a levy to Hidalgo General Hospital. If approved it will require renewal every four years and adds 0.5 mill to taxes, about $1.50 yearly for a $2000 home.

Funeral Services Today for Garland Johnson

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p m today in the Heather Chapel with Rev William Castle of the Deming Baptist Church officiating. Johnson aged 53 died in Calgo General Hospital Wednesday afternoon. A full obituary will be published next week.

Estrada Dies at Hidalgo General Hospital

Mrs. Augustina J. Estrada died in Hidalgo General Hospital Thursday morning. Rosary is set for Friday evening at Heather Chapel and Mass will be held at St Joseph's Catholic Church Saturday morning. Full obituary to follow next week.

Funeral services were held Tuesday February 4 at Heather Chapel for Lola Mae Myers Looney born February 20 1914 in Silver City. Survivors include three sons Melvin Hays of San Jose California George Botzo Lordsburg and three daughters Darlene Hays Albuquerque June Thompson and Alice Hays San Diego twelve grandchildren two brothers Arthur and Floyd Myers Lordsburg one sister Daisy Barrow Bisbee Arizona and many nieces and nephews. Mother's March Of Dimes Nets $407

The Mother's March of Dimes drive in Lordsburg and Cotton City raised 407.55 dollars last Friday night. Mrs. Jack Murray chaired the effort and praised the workers. Coffee and donuts were provided at the American Legion Hall by Wright's Pokery with Bill Kimbley Bob Williams Vice Reay and Harber Heather assisting.

Mary Austin Crowned Basketball Sweetheart at Lordsburg game

Mary Austin was named basketball sweetheart at halftime of the Lordsburg animal game on a February Saturday night. Attendants Sharon Farris Dodie Estrada Jeanne Hill Josephine Gary wore formal gowns with corsages and were escorted by sets of boys. After the game the homecoming dance followed in the cafetorium with the Moon River theme and Latinaires providing music.

First Librarian In Lordsburg Passes Away

Funeral services for Mrs. Nan cy Virginia Pippin were held in Heather Chapel. Born November 6 1677 in Texas she died January 30 in Coolidge Arizona. She lived in Lordsburg since 1916 and later resided with family in Cloverdale and Coolidge. Survivors include daughter Naomi granddaughter Pamelia Meadows grandson John A Nicholson and others. Burial followed in Mountain View Cemetery with pallbearers listed.

The Teachers pulled away in the final minute to beat a younger National Guard squad 53 to 47 in a high school gym game for Boy Scout Troop 120. The Press led early and held a halftime margin as fouls aided the Guard comeback.
