Governor Splits With Old Buddies In New Mexico Oil Row

In Santa Fe Governor Jack Campbell, an oil lawyer and former Interstate Oil Compact Commission head, clashes with New Mexico oil interests over spending proposals. Moxey of the New Mexico Oil and Gas Assn. accuses Campbell of trying to scuttle his program as tensions spill into the Gate of Spain dining room.

City Candidates Filing Deadline Set by Council

City officials set March 10 at 5 pm as the filing deadline for municipal offices for the April 7 election. Voter registration must be completed by 5 pm March 9 at the county clerk’s office. Voters in city limits should correct registrations to prevent election disputes. The council also awarded a $635 Peerless water pump contract to Clary Co of Deming and approved the 1962-63 fiscal audit and golf course caretaker duties at Short Memorial Park.

Legion Post To Honor Departed Comrades

At a Monday night meeting the Robert Swan Post outlined plans to observe the American Legion birthday on March 15. A 90 mm anti aircraft gun fronting the hall will be dedicated as a monument to all deceased U S Presidents and Hidalgo County comrades in ceremonies at 2 p m. Marine Recruiter to Visit Lordsburg Mondays

Gunnery Sergeant Frank Bukowsky of the Marine Corps recruiter for Lordsburg will be in Lordsburg on Monday February 17 from 2 to 4 pm at the Post Office. He will test and screen applicants for Marine Corps programs for young men and women and will return on the third Monday of each month.

Central School To Present Pageant America Sings

The fourth and fifth grades of Central school will present the pageant America Sings in the gym on Friday February 21. A dress rehearsal is in the afternoon and the evening show for parents and adults begins at 7 30.

Voters Approve Hospital Levy in Hidalgo County

Hidalgo County voters approved the hospital levy by 211 to 92 in the special election. turnout was about 15 percent as precincts reported mix results including Lordsburg 155 to 44 in favor and 44 against, Ani mas 20 to 23, Rodeo 0 to 4, Virden 26 to 13, and Cienega 0 to 8.

El Paso Chamber Banquet to Feature Ellsworth Green Jr.

Ellsworth Green Jr. executive vice president and general manager of the El Paso Chamber of Commerce will be the guest speaker at the annual Chamber banquet on Monday February 17 at 7 pm in the high school cafetorium. He will discuss labor relations and welfare topics with prior study in San Juan Puerto Rico and Western Europe. Special recognition will be given to an outstanding member for the first time. Musical numbers by local performers will accompany the event. Tickets are available at the Chamber office or from directors until February 15. none will be sold at the door.

The Heart Fund Board Commission met at the Soil Conservation building in Edith White's office on February 1. Astronomy Club Forming in Lordsburg Event

A new club named The Astronomy Club is being formed at the home of Mr and Mrs Ken Mitchell corner of Seventh and Pyramid Street on February 18 at 7 30 p m. The meeting will discuss goals learn about stars and include an election of officers. All interested persons are welcome.

Delegates Chosen At County Demo Convention

The Hidalgo County Democratic convention chose eight delegates for the state event in Santa Fe February 22. Delegates from Virden Animas Cienega and Lordsburg were named with no alternates permitted. The convention also laid out rules for pre primary balloting and eligibility under the new election code including party affiliation timing.
