General Pershing Visits Lordsburg for Brief Stay

General John J. Pershing and his sister Miss May Pershing visited Lordsburg on a Saturday during their Tucson winter stop. The commander, cheerful and cordial, greeted locals, viewed Chamber of Commerce displays, and discussed progress on the Western Housing Program. Secretary Willard P Halt presented Pershing with a hand carved cane and an Indian tomahawk by ex soldier Albert Johnson, plus a pack saddle linked to Geronimo.

Interesting housing material price drops under 1929 figures

J V Detha reports FHA findings showing building materials costs are down from 1929 levels. Dimension lumber, flooring, siding, lath, sash and door, cement, and shingles all fall from 6 to 14 percent, with overall reductions over 8 percent. A $1000 material bill in 1926 would cost about $56 today, highlighting a favorable time to build or repair homes.

Studio Theatre Cancels Flirtation Walk Show

A booking error cancels Flirtation Walk for February 3 and 4 at the Studio theatre. Registered Nurse will be shown instead with Rebe Danie and Lyle Talbot in leading roles. Tragedy in Lordsburg: Lee Henry Jenkins Dies in Illness

Lee Henry Jenkins, a truck driver for transient relief, died last Friday in Lordsburg where he had lived briefly. Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ with a large crowd attending. He leaves his widow Jesse Collins and five children, plus his mother and four sisters. He was born December 4 1900 near Sturgis Missouri and joined the Church of Christ at 17. He had worked as a business college graduate in Chillicothe Missouri and as an operator for the Burlington and Union Pacific.

Geronimo Pack Saddle Found Near Animas Home

Robert J. Weight of Animas brings a pack saddle to the Chamber of Commerce discovered in a former Geronimo hideout behind his home. The wooden frame is intact though leather is damaged by desert rot. Also found were Indian writings and a sun symbol drawing later used as New Mexico's flag.
