Gov Tingley reports a strong 1937 for New Mexico with record highway construction and growth in oil and gas. Output rose to 104800 barrels daily with 702 new wells, while tourism topped 1.3 million foreign cars and state bank resources surpassed 12.8 million.
William O Br yan Shugart known as Bill died at his Rodeo home on December 25 after a brief illness. Funeral services were held December 27 at the Baptist church with Rev. Weaver officiating and burial in Rodeo Cemetery. Born June 5 1870 at Round Mountain Texas he moved to San Simon valley in 1896 and later married Eula Collins May 8 1902. He and his wife had three children two daughters and a son all surviving. wife and daughter Ona Wheeler of Tucson and son Raymond of Yuma attended the funeral. daughter Vaidus Cox of Shoup Idaho could not due to weather. The family resided in Rodeo since 1907 and he worked for San Simon Cattle Company before starting his own ranching venture. Pallbearers were John Davis R I Jarvis Jack Hoggett Dave Moore Jack Maloney Holmes Maddox Roy Hoggett and Jack Delaney.
Senior C E members gather New Year’s Eve in Sunday School rooms for a nine o’clock start with a covered dish luncheon and business meeting. After games and stunts, a brief service leads to a New Year celebration at midnight beforegoing home.
Mrs. P. M. Chase and Mrs. Maurice Conner hosted a Wednesday Sewing Club luncheon at Mrs. Chase’s home. A Christmas color scheme decorated the rooms and a four course one o'clock meal was served. Gifts were given to several members: Mrs. J. Cloyd Miller, Mrs. Robert Pierce, Mrs. Jack Smith, Mrs. Crawford Mearns, Mrs. Maurice Conner, and others.
Mr and Mrs Herman Gustafson hosted the F E Club Christmas gathering on December 23 with a yuletide theme. Guests enjoyed games and a Santa gift exchange, followed by cranberry salad wafers and coffee.
Compton Vaughn of Capeville Oregon arrived last Friday to spend Christmas with his wife and their relatives. He will stay a few weeks with Mrs Vaughn’s parents Mr and Mrs J Croom at Animas.
Nearly all towns report robust building activity with many cities hitting new highs. The steady growth suggests a healthy economy and expectations for continued expansion through 1938.
The Business and Professional Women’s Club of the Fourth District meets in Deming on Sunday January 9 for its annual session. Representatives from Silver City Las Cruces Lordsburg and Deming attend. Miss Priscilla Whitehill presides. A 1 pm luncheon precedes the program and business meeting. Jean Rouse of Raton NM federation president speaks among others. The local club aims for its largest delegation.
Lordsburg High School Mavericks beat the Douglas Bulldogs 27 to 24 to claim their first win of the season. Freddy Gusman hit sharps, Carter and Edwards stood out, and guard play under the boards by Cureton fueled the comeback. Next Friday they meet Hatch in a key district showdown.
A New Year dance at the Womans Club building is planned for New Year’s Eve 1937 to usher in 1938. The event features a fine orchestra and refreshments with sandwiches and coffee, inviting attendees to bring a companion and enjoy every minute of the gay evening.
Dr and Mrs C B Austin hosted an informal Christmas Eve open house for friends. After a spread of Christmas delicacies, guests gathered at the piano and sang carols, making the gathering a gala affair with warm hospitality.
Virgil Eugene Miller, a seven pound baby boy, was born December 21 in Calexico California. Parents Mr and Mrs V O Miller celebrate with pride as Virgil is the first grandchild of Emily Lewis. Congratulations abound.
Twenty baskets donated by Knights of Pythias and Pythian Sisters were assembled by Mrs. Vernon Brock and given to needy families in the community.
The Womans Missionary Society of the Methodist church will meet Friday January 7. Installations of officers will be postponed to Sunday January 9.
Warren Fuller a University of Texas at Austin student spent the Christmas holidays at the home of his parents Mr and Mrs Claude C Puller in Texas.
Mr. and Mrs. Al Bordges and Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Conner of Salinas California spend the holidays with the Bailey family and Mr. and Mrs. I C Conner and family. They will stay until after New Year.
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Shugart and their two children of Yuma spent Sunday with Mrs. Shugart's mother Mrs. May Hanner and family.
Union Clothing Store was burglarized and a rear room set ablaze early Monday. Investigation found a forced window entry on Pyramid Street and an attempted safe explosion. No significant theft occurred and damage centered on the safe and window area.
Nelson William Shine 63, longtime Burlington Santa Fe conductor, died of apnea at Hurley after retiring December 16 following more than 40 years with the railroad. He planned to move to Los Angeles with his wife after the new year. Mrs Shine, formerly Miss Munson, was a Lordsburg teacher. The couple had lived in Hurley about 10 years and were widely known and respected. Burial arrangements were to be in Los Angeles.
We extend sincere appreciation for kind deeds and words during the death of our husband and father Wm Shugart. The support will be held in fond remembrance by Mrs. Bula Shugart and families of Wheeler Cox Shugart Collins.

Effective response hinges on rapid crew deployment, trails, lookout towers, and better communication. 1932-36 average burned was 338000 acres, this year only 99348 by mid November with 11208 fires, over 90 percent held under 10 acres.
Mr and Mrs Harry Martin and their son Chas F with Gerald Puller of Miami Arizona spent Christmas day with Chas Puller and his wife in town for the holiday gathering.
Roy B Clayton age 36 prominent Ponies cattleman and rancher from Mid county died after sudden illness last Friday while at Mule Creek cutting a shipment. He was taken to Silver City General Hospital and died soon after. Burial followed in Mountain View Cemetery Lordsburg with services in El Paso. He is survived by his widow a son ten and four brothers and a sister. Burial in Lordsburg completed the family obituary notes his residence relocation to the ranch east of Lordsburg two years ago.
Mrs Matihilde Johneson chair of the Hidalgo Bounty Tuberculosis 6Christmas Seal committee expresses gratitude to county and Lordsburg faculties for cooperation in the 1937 drive. Donations from classes included Mina Vera Bee Tiggle of Central school with $2.15 from sixth graders, Animal school $2.50, and Cloverdale $2.00.
Mr and Mrs Dutch Miller of Todeo were shopping in Douglas when a fire of unknown origin totally destroyed their residence. Rescue efforts saved nothing and the cause remains undetermined.
Members and guests gathered at Mrs. K. H. Singer’s home on Tuesday with the usual after Christmas mood. New members Mrs. L. B. Robinson and Mrs. Luella B. Clark will be welcomed at the next meeting. A light dessert of jello with whipped cream cake and coffee or cocoa was served to listed members and guests.
Dr. and Mrs. C. B. Austin plan to attend the Tournament of Roses and the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. The game features the University of California and the University of Alabama as opponents and is billed as a top contest of the season.

The Church of Christ led by Minister Brimberry expects a fine attendance on the first Sunday of the New Year. Mrs. Mozelle Messacar and her two daughters Mary and Katharine are spending holidays in Phoenix and Tucson.
The Lordsburg Ladies Club sponsored a Christmas home lighting contest rewarding six residences for their creative displays. First prize went to Dr. and Mrs Banks Austin, followed by Mr and Mrs Townsend, Mr and Mrs Scofield, Mr and Mrs Edington, Mr and Mrs Melnits, and Mr and Mrs Amelia. The community cooperated with lights adorning homes and nearby business areas.

The Sportsmen's Association of Southwestern New Mexico proposes shortening the deer open season to November 1 through 10 and extending the bear season by 15 days after deer closes. They seek a full-time deputy game warden for the area and urge trapping coyotes to protect wildlife.
