Boy With Polio Fights Back Through Long Treatment

A healthy eight year old, Bobby Clark, contracts poliomyelitis and endures months in an iron lung. He moves through El Paso General, Providence Memorial, Carrie Tingley Hospital, Lordsburg, and Rancho Los Amigos, returning home in May 1955 to continue recovery with family.

Plane crash kills four near Animas in 1955

Four people died when a private plane crashed in a field four and a half miles northeast of Animas at 2:00 P M last Tuesday. The craft reportedly spun from low altitude and exploded on impact, scattering wreckage and bodies over a wide area.

Freshman Class Raises March of Dimes Funds in Relay Corner

The January 29, 1955 S. H. S. freshmen collected well over $200 for the March of Dimes in four and a half days by holding relay postings at the red light corner and asking motorists for support.

Local Elks Club Distributes 27 Christmas Baskets

Lordsburg Elks Lodge distributed 27 baskets filled with food goodies and toys to needy families. A committee including Mil ton Bradford W C Jones Dr H S Cohen Douglas Strain Andy Faliat Gordon Willis Bob Harwood and Roddy Poindexter prepared baskets worth about 10.20 each. Larger baskets went to bigger families and smaller ones to smaller families. Community donations of toys fell short and were the only disappointment noted.

Cinemascope Screens Debut at Coronado Theatre

Coronado Theatre will show Cinemascope pictures starting January 2 with a larger picture deeper depth and brilliant color. January lineup includes Hit the Deck Three Coins in a Fountain Green Fire The Trail and How to Marry a Millionaire.

Hidalgo Cafe Fire Damages Roof and Interior

A fire at the Hidalgo Cafe on Highway 60 was reported at 3 a m Thursday. The volunteer fire department battled the blaze for two hours, causing extensive roof and upper structure damage as well as smoke and water damage to the kitchen and rear areas. Faulty wiring is not suspected. the alarm was raised by Manuel Disz of the Hidalgo Motel across the street. The building is owned by E J Short and managed by Dick Davis.

Lions Club Hosts Second Annual Lordsburg Christmas Party

The Lions Club sponsored a theatre party for Lordsburg youngsters at the Coronado Theatre last Friday. Richard Allen provided the theatre and show, Romney Produce supplied apples, and the club financed popcorn. About 700 children attended two shows, a western feature with Andy Clyde comedy and cartoons, lasting nearly two hours.

Band Parents Club Meeting Set at High School

Regular Band Parents Club meeting scheduled for Thursday January 5 at 8 pm in the High School Auditorium. Junior High Band will perform and all parents are urged to attend.

Mavericks Hold Off Ysleta In Tight 57 55 Victory

Lordsburg Mavericks defeat Ysleta Indians 57 to 55 in a close game. The halftime score favors Lordsburg 18 to 12, with a 31 to 29 edge after the third. The final quarter narrows the gap as Ysleta mounts a late push.

The Mountain States Telegraph and Telegraph Business office at 028 S. Main Street will shift hours to 8 A M to 5 P M from January 1. Current hours run 8 A M to 5 30 P M.
