Lordsburg Lodge No. MA F and A M held its Installation of Officers Tuesday evening. Installing officer was P M Chase with Sam Gass as marshal. Elected officers installed included Rex Kipp as worshipful master and Al vin L Parker as senior warden. others listed with several absent.
The Lordsburg Mavericks football team will compete as the Lordsburg Lions in the Sun Bowl in El Paso on January 2. A list of attending players is given and those unable to go must notify to release their tickets for others. Bus leaves from the high school early morning.
Lordsburg Mavericks win their sixth straight 1949-50 season game 38-34 against Virden at the high school gym. Belti scores 13, Frias 12 for Lordsburg while G Merrell leads Virden with 10. B team fell 30-28.
Santa Claus arrived at the Recreation Center on Christmas Eve to greet city children. Alvin Parker handed out 1200 parcels of Christmas candy donated by J A Johnson, who thanks Parker and police volunteers Lalo S. Sanchez Rodolfo Chavez Frank Robbs and Harvey Martin for guiding traffic during the visit.
Mr and Mrs J P Humphries managers of the Shell gas station at Separ held their third annual open house and Christmas party for area children on Christmas Eve. The event took place in the gas station building transformed into a Santa Claus room with decorations and a lit tree. Santa distributed 46 bags each with a pound of candy a pound of nuts and fruit. Local grown ups enjoyed hospitality as guests from Separ Hachita Silver City Albuquerque and Lordsburg attended along with F H Daniel agent for the Southern Pacific railroad Lordsburg and Mrs Daniels Joe Bevins Archie Lee Smith and Troy L Jones.
Greyhound bus driver George Colson II addressed the Lordsburg Lions Club at the Westerner cafe detailing driver duties and the strict exams required. He spoke on road safety and Lions plans to sponsor Lordsburg High School football team’s Sun Bowl trip in El Paso. Dick Rice Jr visited his father, President Dick Rice.
The Friday judging highlighted festive homes in the Christmas decor contest. First prize went to Mr. and Mrs. George P. Jeffus for a house draped in lights and a lawn display, second prize to Mr. and Mrs. Leo Cohen with outdoor candles and a village scene, third prize to Mr. and Mrs. Ralph P. Smith featuring roof lights and a Santa tableau. Judges were Mr. and Mrs. Lew Morris and Mr. Faulkner.
Duncan Valley Electric Co-Operative energized eighty miles of new line on December 19 bringing service to about 108 new connections. The route runs north from Duncan about twenty miles to the Guthrie district and extends south and east into New Mexico reaching Bedrock, serving twenty five New Mexico families soon.
Romney Produce Co hosted a Christmas dinner at the Western Café on Saturday at 6 PM for employees and wives and friends. The event featured ham dinner, carols led by Mrs. Maurice Mortensen, piano by Harvey Breaks, violin solos by Roger Welles, and cash gifts of one dollar per month of service. Also noted are visits from Mr. and Mrs. Felix Monroe and Mrs. J. L. Nally arriving from Farwell to spend the holidays.
County assessor Percy Brown writes The Lion and The Lamb in the January Outdoor Life about a moonlit New Mexico ranch hunt for a mountain lion. The tale features Antonio Chavez nicknamed El Borrego who outsmarts the lion. Browns also serves Hidalgo County assessor. visitors Mr and Mrs Arnold Black and twin sons from Gila came to Lordsburg for the holidays.
