John A. Johnson owner of the Recreation Center on Railroad avenue announces Santa Claus will appear Christmas Eve Saturday Dec 24 at 7 30 pm in front of the center. Santa from the North Pole will greet children and talk with them and hand out free candy. Adults are invited to share in the season's joy.
Ralph Craig, a junior fullback at New Mexico Western College in Silver City, received the Blackwell trophy for the most valuable player. The award was announced at the Mustang club banquet on December 15, with coach Warren Woodson as guest speaker and 8 other guests in attendance. The trophy is on display at the Union store.
Local residents in Burg and vicinity are urged to join the last minute rush for the annual TB Seals sale. Send in your contributions to combat tuberculosis and support Prevous relief efforts.
The Lordsburg public school will close Wednesday December 21 for Christmas holidays. All grade and high school classes resume Tuesday morning January 3, 1950.
The Liberal reports a list of Masonic Lodge officers for the coming year but secretary G P Jeffus says the list is not authentic. A correct and complete report will be published next week.
The Knights of Pythias annual Christmas party at the K. P. hall featured Rev. Mil ler H. Stroup delivering the invocation and Harold E. Scofield as master of ceremonies. Barbara Parker read Squashville Poor to Rich, Rev. David E. Moore read the Luke Christmas story, and Zeke Kitts led carols with Thelma Ross at the piano. Alvin Parker, as Santa, handed out 150 candy sacks to children.
Leo Martin former manager leaves Conder Jewelry Store and family to move from Lordsburg. Dr H H Conder owner will operate the shop as usual. Mr and Mrs Martin plan a short stay in Phoenix with undetermined permanent address.
The Trading Union department of the Baptist church will lead carols throughout the city on Christmas Eve. Residents wishing carolers at their homes should call 54 to arrange a visit.
Animas High School faces Hachita on January 6 and San Simon on January 10 at Animas. Games include January 19 at Lordsburg and January 20 with Monticello at Animas. January 27 hosts Cloudcroft and January 31 Lordsburg B at Animas. February 17 visits Hachita and February 18 welcomes Quemado.
Mrs. E. D. Wright travels to El Paso for medical treatment. No further details are provided about her condition or the facility involved.
A holiday greeting lists the Malott family units including Mr and Mrs C G Malott and family Mr and Mrs Paul Malott and family Mr and Mrs Edgar Malott Jr and Mrs Curtis Martin Mr and Mrs Clyde Harper and Mr James A Greer Jr as recipients.
Hidalgo County cotton growers vote in a two to one margin to support marketing quotas for 1950. Four participants returned unofficial results with 60 in favor and 24 against. A two-thirds majority was needed, signaling farmers favor smaller acreages and a 90 percent parity guarantee instead of full freedom to plant any acreage.
Miss Harriett Wilson will soon enter the Carrie Tingley hospital near Hot Springs for treatment. The advance notice places her in the care of the medical facility for upcoming sessions.
Lordsburg defeated Bowie 410 to 28 in Bowie Arizona to extend their undefeated run to five wins. Arthur Myers led the locals with 10 points as the B squad beat Bowie's second string 52-20 for their first win of the year.
The N. and T. Club held a 1:30 p m Christmas luncheon at Hotel Hidalgo with guest of honor Mrs. Franklin Poage of El Paso wife of Rev Poage former First Methodist minister. After lunch the group visited Mrs A L Green’s home for a Christmas party with festive decor and gifts under the tree. Attendees included Mrs Poage and ten others.
Mr and Mrs George Haltom will spend Christmas Sunday and Monday in El Paso as house guests of their son and wife Mr and Mrs George Haltom Jr
The First National Bank and Mrs. 8. KE. Allen host a free Christmas party for Lordsburg children at the Coronado theater on Friday afternoon December 23. Doors open at one with a continuous show to five featuring a picture, cartoons, and comedy. Refreshments provided by the bank.
Harvey Breaks led a Lions Club program at Westerner cafe on Tuesday noon. Zeke Kitts sang The First Noel and Silent Night with Breaks aiding. Welles on violin and sax quartet members performed two numbers. A March of Dimes report and rural district committee chairs were announced. A Christmas program is planned for next Tuesday noon at Westerner cafe.
Mrs. Elsie Kipp of El Paso will spend the Christmas holidays at the home of her son and daughter in law Mr. and Mrs. Rex Kipp.
Record of daily high and low temperatures for December including dates Friday through Thursday. Entries show highs of 50 to 58 degrees and lows of 23 to 27 degrees with several days missing data.
