May 6 report notes the city administration cut gas debt and expanded infrastructure. Bond retirements advance ahead of schedule with bonds 1 3 36 37 28 39 40 41 42 43 44 all paid three years early. New mains service lines meters totaling 4670 dollars funded.
The Wo Club hosted its annual Yuletide event on December 14 with Miss Lola Atkinson and Miss Hazell organizing. Guests included Mrs Olivia, Mrs Ella Brown, and many others who enjoyed games, prizes, a snow scene pageant, a decorated tree, candies, date pudding, and hot coffee.
The Nard family gathers at Sarah C. Jernigan home for a Christmas reunion honoring Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Nard. Twelve children and many relatives attend including Mrs. McLeod of Lordsburg and J. L. Nard of Lordsburg with spouses present.
The funeral for E. T. Dunlap was conducted at the Methodist Church with Rev. Bryan Hall delivering the sermon. Pallbearers included American Legion members and local officials, and burial followed at Mountain View cemetery.
The Wednesday Sewing Club held its Christmas party on December 21 at Mrs. Gloria Moses home with co hosts Mrs. Robert Poindexter and Noble Kirkpatric. Attendees gathered around a large dining room table with paper doily place cards and marshmallow candle centerpieces and exchanged gifts from a decorated Christmas tree.
Church School at 9 45 a m and Worship at 11 00 a m with sermon titled The March of Time led by Pastor Bryan Hall at the Methodist Church.
Mr and Mrs Nat Gammon Tom Kerr and family Pete Kerr and family and James Sumner drove to Clifton Tuesday to return Mrs Wilma Kerr Evans to Clifton Hospital after a successful operation. She came home to spend Christmas holidays with her parents and friends locally.
Mr. and Mrs. L R Jones Jr spend Christmas with Mrs. Jones parents Mr. and Mrs Young Bounds, sharing holiday time and family fellowship.
Public notice states all state county city town and school employees must file federal income tax returns under the 1939 act. Married couples with combined net income 2600 or more and singles with 1000 or more must file. Forms available January 3 1940 at the Albuquerque NM IRS office.
The notice lists Sunday School at 10 a m and preaching at 11 a m with the Lord's Supper at the close. BTUS at 6:30 p m and service at 7:20 p m covers topics on faith. A regular business conference is set for Wednesday at 7:20 p m with New Year resolutions urging greater church involvement in 1910.
Andres Hernandez agricultural aide of the Soil Conservation Service in Albuquerque returned home for Christmas to spend time with his parents and friends in Lordsburg. He has served in the government for six years and advanced to a fine position.
Allen Hill and his sister Mildred Hill hosted a seven o clock Christmas night dinner for sixteen guests. The table featured mistletoe sprigs at each place and a mistletoe spray centerpiece with red candles. Guests included Mr and Mrs Cheater Hendrix Mr and Mrs Don Kerr Morenci Miss Louise Wamel Mary Frances Malone June Brooks Gene Burruss Eldridge Brown R H Buddy Wamel Ralph Jones Robert Williams Sterling Brown Jess Rainbolt and the hosts.
Prizes for house decorations totaled ten dollars for first prize to Dr. and Mrs. C. B. Austin followed by seven fifty to W. A. Short, five to H. E. Scofield and three to L. B. Robinson. Spanish-American prize went to Amelio Acosta with second prize of $1.50 to Trofila G. Salaiz Lordsburg. Judges were strangers to entrants. Dr. and Mrs. Austin will donate their winnings to the Infantile Paralysis fund. Earl Kerr and family moved from Lordsburg to California to visit relatives and attend the Rose Bowl.
The Mavericks played four games across Clifton Arizona and Morenci Arizona during the holiday week. They opened with a 27 to 8 win over Clifton High School, then lost 80 to 20 to Morenci in a near two possession swing late in the fourth. A Liberal-San Simon tilt preceded a pending Clifton rematch as the Mavericks prepared for a stronger showing. Coach Pierce lauds potential but calls for sharper shooting and defense as the season nears district play.
The four cent copper tariff is kept due to praise for Chambers of Commerce and civic clubs in the mountain states. A letter from the American Mining Congress mentions seven of ninety six aerators favor transferring reciprocal treaty power from the Secretary of State, with the entire New Mexico delegation backing this move.
The Dunlap family expresses sincere thanks to friends for aid and sympathy at the untimely death of Mrs. E K T Dunlap. E T Dunlap and family along with relatives extend appreciation for kindness during bereavement.
The Church of the Nazarene in Clinton invites the public to Sunday services on December 3 1929. Sunday School at 945 morning worship at 1100 with the sermon Life's Greatest Ambition. Junior Society at 6, NYP& at 630, evening service at 730 with the sermon The Change Less Record.
Earl T Brown and family from Santa Fe arrive in Lordsburg to begin Christmas celebrations. Claude Wood and family join friends and relatives for the holiday. Farle Kerr and Louise Warne visit, with Kerr planning to Phoenix for official business and then to the Rose Bowl to watch Jack's Alma Mater face Tennessee on New Year’s Day.
Naomi Wood of Mias returns home from George Pepperdine College in Los Angeles where she is taking a business course. During vacation she assists in the bank.
H. C. Curley Walter former county commissioner has been officially appointed census enumerator for Hidalgo County. It is likely that other enumerators will be appointed at a later date.
Von Jones of the railroad, stationed at Tucumcari, came home to spend Christmas with his parents Mr and Mrs Felix Jones.
New Mexico Extension Service will award 4 H club charters to groups meeting set standards. Applications follow club organization, listing members, officers, and yearly program. Charters require five members in a shared project, a local leader, and a defined year long program.
The Chase family held a Christmas day reunion with a large dinner. Attendees included Mr and Mrs M Chase, Peter M Chase and daughter Harriet Jane, Dorothy Lister and Ruth Anna, Sylvian Chase Bell and Joe, Chase Wheeler and Vohort from Long Beach, Harry Chase, Miasea Helen and Nancy, and W H Small.
The W. O. W. thanks Lordsburg businessmen for helping with Christmas donations that enabled many children in the south end of town and north of the tracks to enjoy a visit from Santa Claus.
Ronald Egon, a prominent member of the SCS for southern Arizona, returned home to join his family and parents Dr. and Mrs. J. G. Egon. Misses Marcia and Mary Jane traveled from Loretto Academy to join the festive season.
Mr and Mrs J Conner welcomed all their children for a Christmas time family reunion. The group included Calvin and Alfred of Los Angeles Eddie and wife of Salinas Ira Martin and family of Hurley U L and wife of Silver City and Gracie Conner Posner of Santa Rita.
Mr and Mrs Al Bordges and Mr and Mrs Eddie Conner of Salinas California spent the Christmas holidays with the Baileys and Conners and many local friends.
Mr and Mrs Harry Gale and daughter Lane plan to move into their newly built home on south Shakespeare Street within days. Harry Gale constructed the house with help from Bill Smith, showcasing a personal project become residence.
Dr and Mrs C B Austin entertained many friends at a Christmas night dinner. Guests included Mr and Mrs Nat Gammon Mr and Mrs L B Robinson Mr and Mrs Jack Clark Mr and Mrs Earl Kerr Mrs Thelma Ross and Glenn Ross Jr.
The Soil Conservation Service area near Lordsburg shows erosion-control structures and floodwater diversion to Burro Cienga Wash. Repairs after past floods are underway with local labor and SCS equipment to reinforce dikes and rock spreaders. Water spreading aids range forage production.
The Hidalgo County tuberculosis association thanks donors for Christmas seals. A long list names purchasers including Olney, Powers, Oliver, Bowman, Downey, Green, Jordan, Kimberly, Montague, Measeecar, McWhorter, Austin, Pence, Reynolda, Shoon, Williams, White, Austin, Atkinson, and many others from Animas, Rodeo, Virt den, and Cloverdale. One from Cloverdale and four from Lordsburg bought seals. money returned, but names not stated.
Lordsburg mourns the death of Mrs. Annie Vaught in Albuquerque from a personal safety related bullet wound. She returned home from Washington Dc last Saturday. A daughter and a son survive. the Vaught family long resided in Deming.
Miss Sara Gass class 40 and Miss Lucy Gass class 42 arrive home from Mary Hardin-Baylor for holiday vacation to spend time with their parents Mr. and Mrs. Sam Gass.
Dr. and Mrs H L Kent and Robert Kent of Lubbock Texas visited their daughter Mrs T B R Taggart over Christmas. Dr Kent directs Administrative Research at Texas Tech College Lubbock. Richard Kent 2nd Lt US Army brother visits from Fort Sill Oklahoma en route to Lordsburg after stopping in Las Cruces.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Boswell of Albuquerque spent the Christmas holidays with Mrs. Boswell's parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Trimble, during a family gathering.
