Mavericks Lose To Deming In District Action

Lordsburg High School fell 76-45 to Deming Wildcats last Friday. Duncan battled Deming and lost 72-56. Sal Ortega scored 14 for the Mavericks, while Yhen Baisa grabbed nine rebounds. Jaime Tarango led Duncan with 13 points, and Paul Speer had 15 rebounds for the Wildcats. The Mavericks’ B team won 51-43 and then 54-51 in overtime.

The Lordsburg Mavericks B team tournament starts December 29 and runs through December 30 with games scheduled across the two days. The event gathers local squads for a brief competitive run.

Animas Child Burned Trying to Smother Flames

Jacque Johnson a one year old girl of Animas suffered severe burns on her back when her clothing caught fire from a heater Saturday morning at home. Her father Alfred Johnson quickly wrapped her in his coat and smothered the flames, likely preventing worse injuries.

Lordsburg residents are urged to place holiday calls early to ensure completion. C I Height Mountain States Telephone says Christmas and Mother's Day are the busiest times with many calls to non daily patterns causing delays. Extra lines will be used and knowing area codes and numbers helps speed connections.

Former Lordsburg Resident Juanita Acosta Dies in D.C.

Juanita G. Acosta 73, former Lordsburg resident, died suddenly Thursday in Washington D C. She was mother to Eloise De La O and Carlos Lara and two daughters in California, widow of Henry Acosta, and a Liberal office former employee. Funeral services will be held at Heather Mortuary next week.

Jack Bass Receives Twenty Year Award

Jack Bass received a 20 year pin and award in Deming for 20 years of service with the New Mexico State Highway Department. The commendation was presented by head supervisor T. B. White and Deming staff. Bass moved to Lordsburg in 1944 with wife Joy Lynn and raised eight children.

Lordsburg Names Sun Princess Patricia Warren for Sun Carnival

Patricia Warren, Lordsburg's Sun Princess, leaves Monday for El Paso to join Sun Carnival events. Highlights include past queen's party, coronation, symphony at Liberty Hall, dinners at Fort Bliss Club and Juarez Country Club, and the Sun Parade Saturday at 10 am with floats. Warren, a Lordsburg High School alumna and NM State freshman, is escorted by George S. Edwards of Alpine, with parents Mr. and Mrs. Dave Warren.
