Former resident Officer Whatley to be stationed here

Former Lordsburg resident James Lynn Whatley, a graduate of Lordsburg High School and New Mexico State University, joined the New Mexico State Police in August 1988. He ranked fourth in a 26 member academy class and earned top shooter honors. After a two year probation he requested a transfer to Lordsburg and is now reassigned to District 12 Deming in the Lordsburg Sub-District with wife Shirley and three children, Jessica Natlie and Veronica, in Lordsburg.

Chris Sanders, owner and pharmacist, announced Lordsburg Drug will become Medicine Shoppe of Lordsburg on January 1. The change aims to serve the area with 24 7 pricing and services, including lowest price guarantees, monthly specials, health screenings, and group discounts while continuing personal service. Unpaid charge accounts not paid in full within 30 days will be closed.

County Buys Bean House for Road Dept Workshop

County commissioners approved the 40 163 foot warehouse and 25 by 40 foot office building plus a 6 acre lot with a well for 40000 dollars and 1200 dollars for a hoist in the main building. The seller was Harriet DeBusk.

Santa Arrives by Fire Engine at Lordsburg Airport Event

Santa Claus will arrive Friday evening at Lordsburg Airport and travel by fire engine to the Civic Center. He will tour the town announcing his arrival and meet children from 7 to 8 PM to hear Christmas wishes. The Optimist Club offers photos for a small fee and asks for canned food donations, with a drop box at the Civic Center.

McDonald Named Chief of Lordsburg Police Board Action

John McDonald was appointed Chief of Police at the Lordsburg City Council meeting on December 12. The decision followed an executive session on personnel and was approved unanimously, with Councilman Mora absent. Ed Cramer moves to Magistrate Judge.

Food And Toy Drive Ends Friday In Lordsburg

The Lordsburg EMTs Lordsburg Optimist Club and the New Mexico Transportation Department sponsor a food and toy drive ending Friday. Drop off points include The American Restaurant The Waffle Hut Lordsburg Drug and United Waste in Playas. Distribution of donated items will take place December 22.

SP Proposes 60 MPH Trains Through Lordsburg

Southern Pacific proposes raising speeds through Lordsburg from 30 to 60 mph starting after January 1 1991. The plan cites cooperation with the city Mayor Salvador Diaz the NM Department of Highways and Transportation and aim to reduce crossing delays. note the city opposes the change per a council report.

Postoffice At Rodeo Burglarized

The Rodeo Postoffice was broken into on Saturday night or Sunday. The safe door suffered extensive damage though the safe was not opened, and the entrance door was damaged. Police seek information. anonymous tips accepted. A $5,000 reward is offered for information leading to arrest and conviction.

Phelps Dodge Donates 50000 To Animas Schools

The Hidalgo Smelter of Phelps Dodge Mining Company gave 50000 to Animas Public Schools on December 13 to aid a computer based learning system. Superintendent W. H. Champion announced the gift during a ceremony at the school. The funds fund computers and software for language arts and mathematics and include a computer based encyclopedia with audio.
