Hidalgo County Commission Eyes Pay Raise In Special Session

In regular session December 11 the Hidalgo County Commission approved previous minutes with minor changes. Commissioner Mauro Rico requested elected official salary raises and a special meeting will be called. If approved the increase would take effect January 1991 after twenty eight years of service for a County Commissioner. Noce thanked the county and praised service, while the Lazars and others honored long service with plaques and certificates for several years of work, including Darnell at fourteen years as sheriff and Morelos at six years. The Virden landfill problem continues to burden residents.

Food and Toy Drive Aids Hidalgo Needy

A food and toy drive sponsored by the Lordsburg Optimist Club Hidalgo County EMTs and the New Mexico Transportation Department accepts donations of food toys and cash through December 21 for Hidalgo County residents in need.

Western Bank in Lordsburg will operate Saturdays for two weeks from 9:00 AM to noon offering full services including loans. Local leaders urge community donations to aid less fortunate families, with dropoffs at Lordsburg Drug, The Waffle Hut, American Restaurant, and United Waste in Playas.

Swearing in set for December 28 1991 at Court Room 10 AM

County officials elected in 1991 will take oaths December 28 in the Court Room at 10:00 AM. County Road Superintendent Jake McCarty announced purchase of the Casa Frijole building for a road department yard to house all county equipment. The commission met in executive session. Lupe Lopez was hired as part-time housekeeper under management personnel. Fausto Noce was presented a plaque to commemorate his service.

Louie Baisa Named District Coach Of The Year

Lordsburg High School head football coach Louie Baisa is honored as District Coach of the Year after a 12 and 2 season. The Mavericks clinched the district title with a 9-8 thriller over Animas Panthers in Lordsburg, with only losses to Cobre and the state final versus Animas.

Church To Celebrate 75th Anniversary in Virden Ward

Virden Ward in the Duncan Arizona Stake marks its 75th anniversary on December 29 30 with registration at 10 am in the Duncan Stake Center and a 2 pm program. A dance is planned for Saturday night in the old Virden Cultural hall. Distinguished attendees include four former Virden Ward Bishops and H Verlan Anderson. Sunday features a 9 am general meeting and a 6 pm Fireside at the stake center.
