All-State Band Honors for Lordsburg Students

Twenty seven Lordsburg High School students joined the Southrn School District Band at New ton A&M College Las. The group, under Abramo Parotti and Dr Frank Simon, received praise from clinicians and will perform in a spring concert.

Mavericks Start Season With Loss Then Win Against Cliff

Lordsburg High School Mavericks opened with a 62 39 defeat to Western Colts of Silver City. Helm led the Colts with 19 points while Arredondo added 14 and Williams 13 for Lordsburg. The Mavericks later beat Cliff 56 28 with Arredondo and Rivera each scoring 12. The B team beat Cliff B 38 30.

Boys Ranch Fund Drive In Progress

The drive for funds for Boys Ranch is progressing with about one third of the $400 goal reached. Committee chairman Wesley Freeburg hopes the full quota will be reached before Christmas. Contributions may be sent to Wesley Freeburg in Lordsburg. Recipients include First National Bank Hotel Hidalgo Clayton Yarbrough Bishop Lumber Co. Union Dept. Store and many individuals, with anonymous gifts also reported.

Mystery Woman Revealed At Union Sale

Vic Reay identified the mystery woman as Mrs. Elmer Jeanes, news editor, at Lordsburg Liberal. She handed over the envelope containing the answer to his question about the Union sale. Her gift included a $5 merchandise certificate and a 500,000 vote coupon for his wife, elevating her to eighth place.

VFW Representatives Assist Veterans With Tax Exemption

A VFW Post No. 3099 representative Mrs Arthur Boilling of Silver City will aid veterans at El Charro Cafe on Saturday December 14 from 9 am to 9 pm to complete tax exemption forms. Official authorities include Jim Kinkema Fausto Noche Franklin Hood and Isabel Sanchez. Veterans must bring discharge papers and ID showing honorable service of 90 days or more during designated conflicts including World War I World War II Korean Conflict with specified dates and residency timelines.

Judge A W Marshall Dies Quietly in Deming Residence

Southwestern New Mexico mourns Judge A W Marshall longtime sixth district jurist and former mayor of Deming. He served as senior district judge in New Mexico, presiding in Luna Grant and Hidalgo counties. Funeral held at St Luke's Episcopal Church with many local attendees.

Volunteer Fire Fighters Respond to Early Morning Crusher Fire

Lordsburg volunteers rushed to a 3 45 a m alarm at the Jack Adams Construction Co crusher at the 85 mine. Tires and timber supporting the diesel driven belt were burning freely. City Council Pursues Liability Over Substandard Sidewalks

The City Council hires attorneys I. M. Smalley and John Sharber to explore contractual liability and damages from J. W. Jones Construction Co for unsatisfactory sidewalks on Railroad Avenue. The Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce naming Jack Morgan as president at Hotel Hidalgo. He succeeds James Badgett with Russell Smith elected vice president and Margaret Codding retained as manager and secretary for a seventh year. New officers take office January 1 1958.

Girl Scouts Make Favors For Hospitals

Girl Scout Troop No 2 worked on Christmas day favors for Hidalgo County Hospital and the veterans' hospital at Ft Bayard. The meeting was at Damon Dunagan's home. A troop party will be held at Mrs Harold Bishop's home this week and the scouts will visit the hospital to sing carols and deliver tray favors after exchanging gifts.
