Living Trees Grow On Hidalgo County Plantation West Of Lordsburg
A Hidalgo County project grows Desert Afghan or Kings pines on David Ramos’s property near Lordsburg. Seeded since 1984, about 70 000 seedlings have been sown, with 1 000 trees now 4 to 8 feet tall. Trees sell for 3 to 4 dollars per foot and can be planted post Christmas as windbreaks or ornamentals. Ramos plans sales across New Mexico Arizona Texas and possibly California, with California shipments soil free in sawdust and wood shavings. The Afghan pine tolerates heat drought and alkaline soil, needing only about 8 inches of yearly water. Ramos irrigates three times a year. Trees can reach 50 feet in 15 years and can beautify towns or be donated to Lordsburg for city landscaping.
