Rudy Gonzales visits Lordsburg as new police chief

New Lordsburg police chief Rudy Gonzales, previously Dona Ana sheriff, toured the community from his Las Cruces home to thank supporters and pledge cooperation. He will assume office on December 15 and plans meetings with schools, civic groups, and churches to discuss community issues and seek input.

Schmitt Tops New Mexico Senate Vote in election returns

State Canvassing Board certified that Republican Jack Schmitt led the U S Senate race with 176,382 votes, defeating incumbent Democrat Joseph Montoya. Additional results show Harold Runnels winning the Second Congressional District race, Manuel Lujan Jr. sweeping District One, and Dan Sosa Jr. defeating John Donnell for an eight year Supreme Court term.

Increased Lighting To Fight Lordsburg School Vandalism

Lordsburg Schools plan extra outdoor lighting at the campuses to curb vandalism after several high school windows were broken last week. The board approved the policy requiring principal clearance for fund raising and praised the completed paying project as a tremendous improvement. Open house drew about 240 parents at the elementary, 150 at Dugan Torango, and 120 at the high school.

Three New Members Join Lordsburg Hidalgo Chamber Board

Pam Sanders Manuel Rendon and Bill Collins were elected to three year terms on the Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce board replacing Jiggs Reed Harold Jorgenson and Jack Walz. John Robertson announced two new roster additions Carol Kipp The Hanging Tree and Don Frazier Don's Auto Repair bringing the roster near one hundred. A law enforcement seminar in Silver City was reported and Robertson will attend an RC D meeting in Hurley December 16. Members at the meeting included Jim Larsen president A C Rodriguez Robert Allred Fay Powell Jiggs Reed Jack Walz and chamber manager John Robertson.

Animas Christmas Concert Planned at Gymnasium

The annual Animas Christmas concert is set for Thursday December 16 at 7 p.m. in the Animas Gymnasium. Performers include the advanced elementary seventh grade and advanced bands directed by Robert Guyker. Admission is free.

Hidalgo County Grand Jury Selected From Voter Pool

Thirty six Hidalgo County registered voters were chosen as Grand Jury members from the master jury wheel at the Hidalgo County Courthouse. The date for convening is set for January 12 with summons to follow on December 29. Judge Norman Hodges ordered the panel and requested assistance from the New Mexico Attorney General.
