Promotions announced at Lordsburg Prisoner of War Camp include Pvt Herbert W Bailey promoted to technician fifth grade in the Headquarters Detachment. Also promoted are Pvt Vincent W Wheeler to Corporal and Pfc Ralph W Pflanzer to technician fifth grade, with notes on prior service and assignments.

Purloinages and service members mark holiday travel plan

F S McGinnin of Southern Pacific urges letting unused train space from December 15 to January 10 serve service personnel and families during Christmas. McGinnis notes 80 percent capacity for military travel. remaining seats may be filled by fur loughees and families visiting troops on training trips. Also included is Miss Margaret C Fuller enlisting in the WAC as an Occupational Therapist to serve in the Army Medical Department after basic training at Ft Oglethorpe.

Jesus Program Promises Morning Chants and Childrens’ Feature

Gage died in Lordsburg on Friday, December 1. He is survived by his father J D Gage and by a son and two daughters in Flint Michigan. The body was shipped to Michigan for interment.

War Bond Sale Excites Local Land Office Event

Mrs. Allen conducted a War Bond sales event at the land office in War Bond sales. The meeting moved large sums, selling over ten thousand dollars worth of War Bonds. No admission tickets were issued. attendance was by Bond only.

Walter earns aerial gunner wings at Harlingen Army Air Field

Pfc Charles R Walter of Lordsburg received his wings as an aerial gunner at Harlingen Texas Army Air Field. He is home on leave visiting his wife and mother Mrs Ena Walter. He arrived last Thursday and returns to duty next Monday. A party is planned at the Mormon Church tonight. Mr and Mrs C A Schmidt and Miss Lora Newell were Lordsburg visitors Friday afternoon.

New Mexico Wartime Hearings Post Early 1940s Rulings

Commissioner Frank A. Bruno in Denver issued wartime rulings affecting New Mexico firms and individuals. Gas stations run by E J Short and Son and Whiting Brothers Oil were banned from selling gasoline from December 15 to January 31 for coupon violations. J E Knudson faced meat and dairy rationing actions in Albuquerque. Gutierrez Oil of Grants and a Santa Fe area bar faced closures or suspensions. Mrs. Joe Vigil won $150 in Albuquerque district court over a ceiling-price washing machine sale. Apodaca’s Hot Springs store faced shoe rationing suspension for OPA registration failure. Colonial Bar in Albuquerque, run by Joe and Lilly Taber, had beer sales suspended for 16 days.

OPA rationing officials announce no sugar for the 1044 home canning season after December 9. Spare stamp 47, valid for up to 20 pounds, will become invalid.

Bureau of the Census notes New Mexico lumber production. total 1948 output reaches 109,090,000 feet with most from ponderosa pine and Douglas fir. Government food sales through October total about $25 million, at ceiling prices. Tragic Lordsburg Crash Kills Frank Daily

An accident Saturday near Lordsburg on the Duncan highway fatally injures Frank Daily and leaves Jose Guzman and Jesus Ruiz badly hurt. The Daily car, driven at high speed, overturned several times. Daily died at DeMoss Hospital about 2:45 am. The group was en route to a Lordsburg Duncan basketball game and the town mourns.

Womans Club Tea for Officers' Ladies at Lordsburg Camp

The Womans Club hosted its first Christmas party of the season for the Officers' Ladies of the Lordsburg Prisoner of War Camp. About fifty women attended the Monday afternoon event with a richly decorated room, a central Christmas tree, bells, candles, and greenery. Club officers hosted, with six members presiding across three hours, and carols added to the festive mood.

Dinner at Camp Acknowledges Lordsburg Officers Visit

More than one hundred officers and their spouses attended a formal dinner at the officers club of the Prisoner of War Camp Lordsburg on November 50. Rev Burge acting Chaplain of Silver City joined by local residents enjoyed the festivities during their fleet visit since the Camp reopened. Col Napoleon Mainbolt the Commanding Officer welcomed guests on behalf of the Camp personnel, with Forrest Sanders cited. The event highlighted friendly relations between Lordsburg residents and Camp officers and men, and ended at midnight after a very enjoyable evening.

Corporal James Bounds in Italy with 15th AAF P-51 Group

Mrs. Young Bounds reports from the War Department that her son Corporal James F. Bounds aged 20 is in active service in Italy with the 15th AAF P-51 Mustang Fighter Group. He volunteered as a blood donor for a front line medical unit, and his blood type Vim No. 1 is highlighted as outstanding.
