Sheriff's Dept Takes Keys To 18 Wheeler

Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department seized an 18 wheeler with over 300 pounds of cocaine plus evidence of transporting more than 1700 pounds to New York. Michael Lappi of U S Customs credited joint efforts with the sheriff's office and Customs for the operation valued at 65000 dollars, with 2600 dollars seized money earmarked to fight drug trafficking.

Lordsburg School Board Reports On Education Week

Lordsburg Municipal Schools discussed Education Week at a Tuesday meeting. High school and DTMS open houses drew 54 and 77 visitors respectively with several turkey drawings awarded. Reports on fair profits, open-house turnout, 3-4 year old special education growth, and baccalaureate procedures were reviewed along with a fluoride study proposal in the Lordsburg Deming area.

Lions Club To Sponsor Home Lighting Contest

The Lordsburg Lions Club sponsors a county wide Home Christmas Lighting Contest judged by tourists passing through Lordsburg. Judges stay at area motels and receive meals. prizes will be awarded. Entry blanks available on page 2 and entries may be dropped off at the Liberal Office.

Moonlight Madness Friday Lights Lordsburg event

Lordsburgs annual Moonlight Madness sales event set for Friday per Chamber manager Joanna Lopez. Twenty two merchants join the mini mall at the senior Citizens Center and Civic Center, with 24 seeking space. A prank kidnapping night includes prizes from Motel 8 El Charro and Kranberrys, plus a key to the city.

Christmas Tree Permits Available at District Stations

Christmas tree permits are on sale at all District Ranger Stations except the Wilderness. The Mimbres station is open weekends through December 20. December 24 is the last day to obtain a permit for a Christmas tree and for wood cutting. Call District Stations with questions. permits are not sold at the Supervisor's Office but can help obtain numbers for District Offices.

Gem Show Draws 23 Dealers Signed Up Early

Bill Langham of the Gem and Mineral Society reports 23 dealers have signed up for the annual show scheduled February 18 to March 10, six times last year’s pace. Eleven states represented, attendees stay 10 to 21 days, with flyers in state welcome centers and mailed to every gem and mineral club nationwide.

Rededication Ceremony Set for State Capitol in Santa Fe

Opening ceremonies will begin at 12:00 noon Friday December 4 with Governor Bruce King and Santa Fe Mayor Sam Pick delivering remarks. Attendees include New Mexico Legislative leadership and the state’s congressional delegation. Saturday December 5 the New Mexico Association of Counties will present flags for 33 counties. New Mexico Bull Rider Josh O Byarne Wins World Finals Title

Josh O Byarne son of Mr and Mrs John O Byarne wins the world championship bull riding at Coors World Finals in El Paso on November 14. He earned about $3000, a gold and silver buckle, a saddle and a 15X hat after rides of 75 79 and 82 points. This marks the first time a New Mexico rider has claimed the title. He is married to Lisa Frangos and works in El Paso while his wife teaches at Santa Teresa.

Electric Light Caravan rolls through town Friday night

Lordsburg hosts its first Electric Light Christmas Caravan Friday at 6 00 PM with the Moonlight Madness Sale. The route starts at the Border Cowboy on West Motel Drive then along Second Fourth and Main Streets to Wabash and the Nursing Home toward the Projects. Thirteen participants include city police and fire units, county vehicles, a Knights of Pythias Santa float, Best Western American, Smith Ford, Holiday Corporation, Western Bank and local groups.
