Local police seize marijuana cache and warn of youth drug use

Police Officers James Smith and Frank Aguilera recovered about six ounces of marijuana and three cigars from a hidden cache early Saturday. The seizure ties to a prior case as investigators state the drug trade harms youths and local traffic. Fire Damages Art Smith Residence in Animal Town

Fire beneath the roof of the Art Smith residence on Animal Street caused about 1500 in damage around 2 p m. Fire officials expected roof breach in gusting wind prompting a second alarm. Fire Captain and crew arrived with a second truck as firefighters and onlookers moved furniture out to protect it from water and smoke.

Fire department and Rainbow Girls raise funds for muscular dystrophy

Lordsburg Fire Department and the Rainbow Girls collected 94.50 dollars Thursday night. The fire department provided a station for a house-to-house canvass in the town.

FBI outlined set up and cases before Lions Club

Oliver T. Mansfield of Albuquerque FBI explained agency structure and federal violations. He cited bank robberies rising since 1942, appraising lone offenders versus gang activity and cross state line car theft and bad check cases with interstate elements. George Bardain and Wesley Freeburg attended with Lions Morrison and others, and a Zone meeting followed the Deming club visit.

Poindexter Wins Who's Who Jackpot Guessing Game

Poindexter guessed the mystery personality Jack McGhee and matched 16 clues to win the Who's Who drawing. Ms E B Howard announced the winning name in a pretrial drawing with witnesses. The winning entry Arnold Black was selected by two entrants, both with correct clues. The prize box is at Gene's Shell this week as the drawing closes.

Four-Mile Parade Highlights Sun Carnival 25th Anniversary in El Paso

El Paso Texas marks its 25th Sun Carnival with a week of sport social and special events headlined by a New Years Day four mile parade drawing about 150000 spectators. The Sun Bowl game features New Mexico State University versus North Texas State with stars Charley Johnson Bob Gaiters and Purvis Atkins. Lordsburg Nat's Guard Earns Superior Rating for 1969

Battery C of the 2nd Gun Battalion 90mm 200th Artillery, Lordsburg National Guard, under 1st Lt. Jesus Estrada, received a Superior rating for the year ending Aug. 31 1969. The 95.65 score tops the group. summer camp score 92.80 rated excellent. This marks the unit’s first full-year Superior since federal recognition in 1947, with gold badge to be presented May 20, 1960.

Miss Ida V. Saucedo daughter of Mr and Mrs H A Saucedo was recently elected recording secretary of the Delta Zeta sorority at New Mexico State University. Saucedo is a teacher education major at the university.

Mavericks Open Season With Split Victory and Loss

The Lordsburg Mavericks opened the 1959 60 basketball season with a 4 to 28 win at Hachita, then fell 22 to 48 at home to the Silver City Western Colts. Arthur Estrada led scoring in both games with 23 and 8 points, followed by Edmund Richardson and Louis Rodriguez. The LHS Freshmen beat Western Freshman 43 to 20 before the A string game.

Injuries Lead to Death of Young Weldon Hamilton

Weldon Woodrow Hamilton aged 8 died after injuries from a conveyor belt at the Beanery Cotton City and arrived by ambulance at Silver City hospital on Wednesday. Survived by parents Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Hamilton, a brother Darwin Allison, and sister Erin Jean. Funeral at Valley View Presbyterian Church with Rev. Tom Myers. Burial in Presbyterian Cemetery. City Council approves bid for traffic control device

At a special session last Friday the City Council accepted a sole bid of 2350 from Smith Ford Co for a traffic control mate on a lease purchase at about 208 per month. Alderman Bishop led the motion to approve with second by Harwood. Mayor Koff was authorized to sign the agreement as part of routine budget transfers for a police car and a small grader.

Home Decorating Week Contest By Lordsburg Hidalgo Chamber

The Lordsburg Hidalgo Chamber of Commerce sponsors Home Decorating Week from December 6 to December 13. Entries must be submitted to the chamber office by December 19. A point system rewards originality and artistic use of lighting, with prizes totaling $55 including a $25 savings bond for first place.
