Humane Society Set Meeting for Hidalgo County Lordsburg

An organizational meeting of the Hidalgo County Lordsburg Humane Society will be held December 5 at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center. All persons interested in the local animal problem are urged to attend. Refreshments will be served after the meeting.

Unseasonable Rains Hit Duncan and Safford Areas Hard

Heavy weekend rains flooded the Gila River region harming Greenlee and Graham counties. Sheriff reports 150 to 200 evacuations in Duncan, with dikes breaking at 3 a.m. Saturday. Safford area evacuations follow as floodwaters damaging forest sites and roads. River overflows, bridges washed out, at least six hikers unaccounted then located. A man swept to the Blue River near the New Mexico line is feared missing.

Open House Planned at Lordsburg LDS Church

The Lordsburg Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints will host an open house at the Ward Chapel on December 2 from 6 to 9 pm. The event features genealogical displays, a live family home evening, gospel paintings, a spiritual film Man's Search for Happiness, and refreshments. The newly expanded, carpeted facility will be shown. community members are invited.

The Sixth Judicial District serving Hidalgo Luna and Grant Counties seeks $414 900 for operations next year a 7 3 percent rise from last year. New Mexico district courts in total request a 9 6 percent funding increase for 1979 80 operating year.

The Playas Fire Department awarded a plaque to a four year old who carried his younger brother from their burning home. The boy’s act of courage was recognized in a ceremony attended by local officials and fire crews.

Armed Robber Strikes Lordsburg Texaco Station

A man held up the Star Texaco in Lordsburg Wednesday evening, escaping with 240 dollars after tying the attendant in a bathroom. Police describe the suspect as a white male in his mid 20s, about 5'10, with red hair and beard, wearing a green Army style jacket.

Nuclear Missile Complex Site Recommendation Due In December

The Air Force plans a December recommendation to the Secretary of Defense on a large scale nuclear missile complex. The plan envisions a silo based system with up to 257 missiles across about 13 500 square miles, with many silos and security measures. Construction would take about five years, employing tens of thousands and creating housing needs for thousands of workers.
