Officials said Hidalgo County courthouse offices and Lordsburg City Hall will be closed Monday September 3 in observance of Labor Day and will reopen at regular hours on Tuesday September 4. Local services and businesses follow the same schedule.
Animas Independent School District voters in Hidalgo County will decide on a 1.5 million dollar bond on September 11 to fund an eight classroom elementary building a Vo-Ag facility and related site work solar heating and equipment. The board set the election at July 12 with 12 year repayment and minimal tax impact. Polling places include Rodeo Animas and Playas community centers with 8 am to 7 pm hours.
Animal Elementary School officials advocate a Sept 11 bond vote to fund a new classroom addition and a Vo-Ag building expansion. The current Vo-Ag Structure would be repurposed into a maintenance area as part of the plan.
Lordsburg Mayor Alan A. Koff may fill two council vacancies by September after delays and prodding from Assistant District Attorney Manuel Saucedo. One seat has been open since October of last year and the other since April 1978 following Harry Heath's resignation over airport lighting decisions.
Lordsburg to host the 29th Hidalgo County Fair at the fairgrounds near I 10 from September 6 to 8. Entries open at 10 a m Thursday with judging at 6 p m in the exhibit building. Old Timers meet at 7 30 p m Thursday at Lordsburg High School Cafetorium. Exhibits due by 5 30 p m Thursday livestock entries by 8 p m. Friday features an Old Timer Parade and show times from 12 noon and 1 p m for livestock judging with showmanship 2 30 to 4 30 p m.
R L Winslow promoted to Smelter Superintendent at Hidalgo Smelter Tyrone Branch Phelps Dodge Corp effective September 1. He earned a B S in Chemical Engineering from Drexel in 1973 and studied at the University of Arizona. joined Phelps Dodge August 25, 1975 as Process Engineer and headed Technical Services from October 1, 1977. He is a member of AIME and lives with his wife Connie in Playas.
The Old Timers Parade begins at 10 00 a m Friday September seven. Floats register with Norma Badders by 9 00 a m parade morning. Fay Powell is parade marshal coordinating floats. The bicycle brigade forms at Central School around 9 30 a m and joins the parade after judging at Enrichment Center. Prizes: three cash awards for the bicycle brigade.
Michael F. Shaw will be promoted to Technical Services Department Head at the Hidalgo Smelter effective Sept. 1. He has a 1970 BS in Chemistry and a 1975 MS in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso and previously served as Plant Engineer and Casting Superintendent in related Phelps Dodge operations. He and his wife Sue and children Tanya and Christopher live in Playas.
