Brown Wins Over White For County Magistrate Court
In a low turnout primary Judge C. L. Brown defeated Warren White 467 to 332 votes for the new county magistrate court which will replace the justice of the peace. The office is effective January 1 and magistrates will be state salaried. James Kinkeman will face Joe Rouse in November for county commissioner from the Lordsburg district. Carter Kirk faces Bob Beckett for state representative. Absentee voting is new in New Mexico with 20 ballots cast.

High Bid Wins Hidalgo County Oil Lease Sale
Oil leases covering about 150 000 acres in Hidalgo and Luna counties were sold to Houston investor F Cockrell Jr at more than 50 000 dollars. Most parcels lie on rural Midalgio County land about 200 miles from current producing wells. Major oil firms also pursued leases, with Cockrell seeking about 81 000 acres of nearby Bureau of Land Management land in the same region and officials indicating most will be granted.
