The Pocos edged C P S 5 to 4 in a tight final game as two runs in the first inning and late scoring kept the title within reach. Gale pitched for C P S while Chapman caught for the Pocos. The series opened with a 4 3 Pocos win and the second game saw C P S triumph 16 to 14.
Lordsburg with Salaiz pitching a complete game and Gandara and D De La Rosa delivering multiple hits, the Indians piled up 15 hits and four errors on Hanover. The final score was Lordsburg nine, Hanover five after a close nine inning rally including a three run fifth and a seven run seventh.
Captain John R. Bradford of the State Police announces that brake and light stickers are due September 1 and urges all motor vehicle operators to obtain their stickers to avoid violations and penalties.
The Poco softball squad edged the C P and team 6 to 5 in a thrilling season finale played Monday night. Key figures include coach E M Fisher Jr and players John Robertson Fernando Maxwell Dale Latham Tom Lockwood Bil Cochran and Bil Cochran among others with managers Foy Powell and Raymond Saucedo leading the club.
Hidalgo County Sheriff's Posse will select the Rodeo Queen for the County Fair and Rodeo to be held Friday and Saturday. Entries close September 17 with registration at the courthouse through Damon Dunagan. Contestants must be single aged 16 to 19 inclusive and permanent Hidalgo County residents able to ride.
Russ Smith of Globe Arizona buys Prine Motor Co on East Railroad Ave from local Ford dealers. Smith took possession Monday August 25 and plans official opening Friday September 5. He brings three mechanics Jim Rike Neil Caldwell and Bill Tafoya and seeks suitable staff.
Housing for several teachers in local schools is urgent. Anyone having furnished rooms apartments or houses to rent are asked to call the office of Supt. Wesley Freeburg at phone 32. Some teachers are single others married. It is urgent that adequate housing be found before school opens.
The Central School PTA executive committee met at the president Mrs Tom Lockwood home to discuss plans for the coming year with the theme Building a firm foundation for our children. The first regular meeting is scheduled for Sept 15 at 7 30 pm in the Central school building and all parents are urged to attend.
Beginning Tuesday September 2 library hours change to Monday through Friday 2 00 to 5 30 p m and Saturday 9 00 a m to 12 noon for public access and services.
Pocos heads the local softball standings in a season dominated by four top teams. With two others failing to complete 20 games, Pocos would still clinch the league title even without a Shaughnessy playoff between the two playoff winners. Standings show Poco ahead with Banner Mines and Rich's Motor close behind.
The Chamber of Commerce announces Labor Day closures Monday September 1 with all shops grocery and department stores garages lumber yards plumbing firms Community Public Service bank and county and city offices shut all day. Drug stores will honor Sunday hours 9 am to 12 noon and 1 pm to 5 pm. A safety warning urges cautious driving over the long weekend.
Dr. John C. Mitchell says no new polio cases in Lordsburg and supports opening schools on schedule. Wesley Freeburg announces student registration Friday August 29 and classes start Tuesday September 2 at 9. The New Mexico Medical Society endorses keeping schools open during polio outbreaks to improve supervision and early symptom detection.
Dr Edwin C DeMoss 72 pioneer physician of Lordsburg died Saturday night at Hidalgo County hospital after a heart attack. He suffered the fatal attack following a two hour operation on a patient. Survived by widow a son Edwin C DeMoss of Boulder City Nev a daughter Mrs Elmer Mary Josephine Sjostrom of Everett Wash six grandchildren and two named Edwin C and Craige DeMoss.
