Lordsburg Internment Camp News notes the start of school as children head to city schools or local one room houses. It highlights apples as a healthy budget fruit, a birthday celebration with a mission themed cake, and local residents like Mrs. W. P. Churchill and the Williams family.
Major and Mrs W P Churchill hosted a dinner at the Hotel Hidalgo Friday evening. Guests included Colonel L Ledbetter and Mrs Williams with Ralph and Stephanie, plus Mrs Clarence Tate. Afterward, attendees were driven to the Churchill home where movie reels and mint juleps capped the night.
Jimny Hughes resumed local duties late in the week after a five week visit by Mrs. Hughes to San Antonio Texas where she stayed with friends and relatives.
Lt and Mrs C Dater were in Paso on business for several days. Mire Stelle left Wednesday for Breckenridge Texas to spend several weeks at a ranch and her parents home.
Mire H. Traylor spent several days in Las Cruces and planned to return to Lordsburg on Thursday afternoon.
Strayed from Indian Willow Courts a fawn colored male English bulldog. Finder to return to Captain A J Warren and receive reward.
A Warren family letter reports buying a half acre at 1506 8 Federal Blvd Denver Colorado with four houses and chicken equipment for about six hundred birds Fresh vegetables will be supplied from their garden Mrs Warren notes their child Clee Lee enjoyed the move and the open spaces.
Mrs. J. O. Safford hosted a theatre party Monday with several ladies. After the show they visited Eagle Drug Company and enjoyed extra ice cream. Guests included Mesdames F. K Burker E. F. Quillen H. Traylor O. J. Smart G. Tenny and C Tate.
Word comes from Captain and Mrs Edward Sturm that they are now stationed at St Meade Maryland Mrs Sturm is busy house hunting as usual.
Mrs. Ralph Williams, daughter of Colonel L. Ledbetter, was feted at a birthday luncheon held at the Officers Club Saturday at high noon. All officers and wives attended the event amid honors and well wishes.
Pfc Elmer Ottmers and his family left on a fifteen day furlough and will visit in Fredrickaburg Texas.
Set and Mrs. Troy 8S. Edward and family will enjoy a fifteen day furlough somewhere in Texas covering a large area.
Captain T. Brown and Lt. Hum ph r ies returned to Long Island after attending school at Fort Custer Michigan.
Mrs. R. H. Parsons resumes home making in Smith Courts after a few months away. She had been visiting her parents in St. Louis.
The Selective Service Board headed by chairman George P. Jeffus secretary R M Reynolds and member Nat Gammon has been honored by President Franklin D. Roosevelt with beautifully engraved Certificates of Appreciation signed by the President General Lewis B Hershey and other officials. The draft board serves without pay as a patriotic service.
The Office of Price Administration clarifies that 1788 lawyers serve the national and regional offices plus 355 in defense rental areas, totaling 1788 in the national office 9 regional offices 106 state and district offices and 355 defense rental areas. It notes England has ten lawyers only in the Ministry of Food main office with four agencies employing legal staff and many more field attorneys.
The Junior Womans Club met at the Women s Club building last Thursday evening for its regular session.
The Eleventh Naval District announced the Navy will commission 600 women physicians into the Medical Corps. Two hundred in each rank lieutenant commander lieutenant and lieutenant junior grade. Eligible applicants must meet the same qualifications as male doctors and be licensed with internship and hospital training. Married women or those with children under 18 are ineligible. U S C resumes dances on Wednesday September 1 and shows "Bapa At Sea" with Laurel and Hardy tonight. Next Friday features a watermelon party at 7:30 pm at the high school stadium for soldiers and dates, followed by the film "Let's Sing Again." Bobby Breen and local residents visit Clifton Arizona to see Mr and Mrs Asa Tyler.
City Hall hosts a War Finance Committee meeting with leaders including C C Fuller and Mrs H Gane outlining committees for the Third War Loan Drive. Finance Secretary Morgenthau orders the drive to start September 9 with Hidalgo County set to raise 160 900 and Las Cruces district attendees reporting seven counties.
Mrs. J. D. Roberson and cousin Miss Ruth Watkins arrived from Memphis Tennessee this week and are guests at the Ceal Heard ranch south of Hachita. Mrs. Roberson is the daughter in law of Mrs. Heard. Her soldier husband is still somewhere in England.
Mr and Mrs Frank Bowman hosted a Saturday dinner in honor of Corp Gilbert Buvens who is home on leave. Afterward the guests went to the La Fiesta for dancing. Attending were Cpl Buvens Miss Joanne Simmons Miss Betty Reynolds James Allen Robert Reynolds Glen Stoss and the hosts.
The Deming Army Air Base PX is enlarging with an eight foot square wing to boost self sufficiency. The new wing will house an ice cream machine and expand storage, as the PX already makes ice cream for the Service Club and Restaurant.
Mr and Mrs Sherwood Culberson hosted recent house guests Mr and Mrs B McBride of Monterey California and their two children Mrs McBride is Mrs Culbersons sister The McBrides plan to return to Silver City as their future home
Dr. and Mrs. C. B. Austin hosted Wednesday dinner guests Mrs. Doak Heard and her daughter in law Mrs. J. D. Roberson of near Hachita. Also present was Mrs. Robersons cousin Miss Ruth Watkins of Mobile Alabama.
Capt. Thomas Kk. Taggart, son of Mr and Mrs L D Taggart of Albuquerque, the University of New Mexico graduate and former Lordsburg lawyer, is reported well and uninjured in prison camp No 1. He wrote to his wife in Lubbock after being captured in December 1942 while serving with the 200th Coast Artillery.
Deming Army Air Field plans a new single story building to house fifty government girls. The facility will offer single and double rooms with beds dressing tables and chairs to create a homey off duty environment. Lt. William E. Sharp Civilian Dormitory and Company Officer and Mrs Edith Hixson Dormitory Matron will occupy the Billeting Huarters.
