The Lords burg Chamber of Commerce held a dinner meeting at Ranch House Cafe on West Highway 80 Monday August 21. Directors decided to try to interest more members and boost attendance and urged every member to attend. Next meeting is a dinner at 12:00 noon September 18.
Miss Margeret Richards and Mark Bowman present a piano and organ program at the Methodist church on Monday August 28 at 6 15 PM featuring Old Masters and modern composers with no admission charge. They also perform in Deming August 31 at 0 PM at the church for Rev. Ray Ross.
The Cloverdale picnic on Saturday September 2 aims for a record crowd from Lordsburg Hidalgo County and nearby areas. Lordsburg Club now sponsors with free barbeque and new features including canine robots by Thomas H Ellison Ellison Bros Cabazon California and kid friendly entertainment with races contests and prizes ending with dancing at Sundown Saturday night.
The community seeks housing for incoming teachers for the new school year. Teachers will arrive next week and suitable accommodations are essential to attract and retain staff. Property owners are urged to list rentals with Supt. Wesley Freeburg to share available housing details with the teaching staff.
Residents of Lordsburg protest the Southern Pacific Co re routing of trains 29 and 40 starting August 19 1940. East bound train 40 arrives 3 15 AM and 39 at 5 30 AM. Mail delivery delays disrupt local business. Protests extend to Deming Safford Silver City Hurley Bayard Morenci Clifton Duncan Red Rock Globe and others. An injunction to stop the re routing was planned to be filed in Santa Fe with the State Supreme Court, per Attorney General Jose Martinez.
The CPS softball team defeated Banner Mine 5-3 to clinch the second half playoff. CPS scored three in the first, then one in the second and fourth, while Banner tallied two in the second and one in the third. Banner advanced earlier by beating Dockum Routane 11-6, with CPS on a bye August 17 before the final.
Due to re routing by the Southern Pacific Co only one mail train east and one west run daily. Train 43 westbound arrives Lordsburg 11 10 A M Train 6 eastbound arrives 4 15 P M. Mail after departures waits till next day. Four Air Mail flights daily except Sunday westbound 8 23 A M 2 00 P M eastbound 1 00 A M 6 05 P M. Use air mail when possible for speed. Officials may contract for first class delivery by bus.
H C Rowland, a top oil operator, reports a major New Mexico oil field in Animas Valley Hidalgo County. Independent operators hold thousands of acres under lease as Dr P E Skjerseth and Dr C C Coulter back the prospect. Coulter’s bio notes he helped pioneer oil fields in the West, and his Animas assessment calls it one of the finest structures seen in 25 years.
The Lordsburg Municipal school opens the fall term with student registration Friday September 1 at 9 00 a m. Classes begin Tuesday September 5. Summer work included janitorial upgrades at the schools including redecorating at Wilson School and roof work at Central School. Faculty meeting August 31 and calendar notes list holidays and a district tournament.
The American Legion Auxiliary announces Tag Day on September 16 to raise funds for feeding needy children in school lunch rooms. Mrs Moselle Messer car chairs child welfare efforts and funds will be deposited to the Milk Fund. Children eligible for lunches are certified by the appropriate authorities.
Five Piedmont Mining houses at Hilltop were burned in a Thursday blaze traced to a defective flue in Mrs. Mary Ryan’s home. Ryan, about to retire as a mail carrier, had packed most belongings in a pickup truck when the fire began around 5 30 a m and she left for her route.
