Power outage due to pole installation on Railway Blvd area

BLM Designates Guadalupe Canyon a Natural Area in New Mexico

W J Anderson state director of the BLM announced over 3600 acres of Guadalupe Canyon in southwestern New Mexico have been set aside as a natural area to protect its unique wildlife. The canyon near Lordsburg hosts rare birds including Ridgeway's Whitepoll and the tailed warbler and houses species like coati mundi palm bat and jaguar. Biologists fear sycamore nesting sites may not regenerate naturally and urge management and research to preserve vegetation while prohibiting mining and development.

Cornelisons Take Over Ranch House Cafe and Gift Shop

Hank and Norma Cornelison of Longment Colorado have purchased The Ranch House Cafe and Gift Shop from Estelle Champ and will operate it starting August 13. The cafe also serves as the Central Bus Depot and the Western Union Telegraph office.

Turbo Train To Stop Here On Sunday Visit

The Turbo train from the Department of Transportation will visit Lordsburg on its 31 state tour. It arrives at 10 20 am and departs 10 35 am making its only New Mexico stop. The gas turbine powered trains are leased from United Aircraft and have run Boston to New York since 1969.

Traylor Passes On Superintendent Job Offer

The Board of Education explains that Mr. R. V. Traylor declined the superintendent post. He preferred to stay principal of the elementary schools to focus on the new building and its needs.

New Glen Acres Subdivision Open House Planned

Glen Acres subdivision will host a grand opening this Sunday August 22 from 1 to 7 PM. One completed home will be open along with a modular home for inspection and several prizes will be awarded with refreshments served.

City Granted Federal Funds For Police Cars

The New Mexico Governor's Council on Criminal Justice Planning approved a grant of 5485 dollars to the City of Lordsburg for police vehicles for the Lordsburg Police Department. The grant follows a recommendation from the New Mexico Law Enforcement Planning Commission Region 0, with other grants of 2462 dollars to Silver City for riot control gear and 23497 dollars to Grant County for a Metroforco squad.

Lordsburg High School to Hold Friday Assembly

Lordsburg High School principal Samuel M Thompson announces all students must report to the cafeterium on Friday at 8 45 am for an all school assembly followed by an abbreviated class schedule. Students will be finished by noon and should bring pen and paper.

New Mexico Gov King Says No Tax Increase Planned

Gov Bruce King told Department of Development attendees in Silver City that no state tax increases are anticipated during his four year term. HADCO president Gilbert Buvens and Lordsburg Chamber head Glen Dorsett attended. The meeting covered tax planning concerns and attracting retirees and new industry to New Mexico, including projections on inquiries to DOD and planned tourist promotion funded by state dollars.

Punt Pass And Kick Registrations Taken

Registrations for the 1971 Punt Pass and Kick contest run August 23 to September 26 at Smith Ford. The event, in its 11th year with NFL and Ford dealers sponsoring, has drawn over 6 219 000 participants ages 8 to 13. Boys register at Ford dealers with no fee or required equipment.
