Lordsburg National Guard Members Deploy to Fort Bliss

Twenty members of the Lordsburg Post of the National Guard left Sunday for Fort Bliss Texas for a two week training period under regular army rules. Enlisted men train 8 am to 5 pm with officers holding nightly sessions. the article notes a photo of the group before departure with several named members.

Milk Fund Drive Planned by American Legion Auxili ary

Moselle Messecar chairs October milk fund drive for the American Legion Auxiliary. Last year the community contributed about 400 dollars. free milk was served daily in public schools under Principal Taylor for children from disadvantaged families. About 10 dollars remains. milk distribution starts in September after list revision by the County Nurse and Welfare Department. Watch local paper for Oct drive updates.

Dusting Cotton Fields At Animas Valley To Fight Stink Bugs

Department of Agriculture planes dust cotton on the Herbert Strange farm near Animas to exterminate the stink bug. Entomologist Jim O Neal of the New Mexico Extension Service and County Agent E Hitson report the insect, not a worm, flies and is hard to control. Dust, 10 percent DDT, 2 percent HBC and 50 percent sulfur, covers 35 to 40 acres per load, killing over 80 percent on first application. Over 2,000 acres treated. planes fly about 3 feet high to keep dust on plants. one plane damaged on takeoff but landed safely.

Richins Brothers Ship First Car Of Produce

The Richins Brothers sent a carload of produce from Animas to Central Produce Co in Nashville Tennessee. About 600 sacks of white Bermuda onions sold FOB Animas at 2.75 per 60 lb sack and netted roughly 2.10 per sack. Thomas B. Barr of Barr Co Phoenix states the first lot shows strong prices and a 6 1 2 acre patch promises a solid return as they ship the rest via Lordsburg for better transport.

Town Council Holds Special Meeting on Lighting and Bonds

Town Council met Tuesday evening with Mine and Smelter Company reps offering lighting options for the Highway 70 underpass at Main and Railroad Streets. Bond firm reps discussed selling water and sewer bonds, with revenue bonds likely if sewer expansion proceeds.

B. and P. W. Club Opens New Year Activities

The B. and P. W. club met at Westerner Cafe on Thursday August 12. Mrs. Mertice Brooks, president, led the business session. Six new members were elected: Frieda Cohen Flo Blakey Estelle Holt Hazel Robbs Ruth Schmidt and Maureen Leistikow. Ruth Schmidt County Health Nurse outlined a future series of Mother's classes. Moselle Messecar proposed adult Guidance classes with university instructors and college credit.

Brake and Light Stickers Due September 1st

Patrolman John Bradford announced that brake and light stickers are due by September 1. He said drivers will be checked for valid licenses at that time.
