Lordsburg in the extreme northeast hosted a grand American Legion and Auxiliary convention with delegates from Raton and Lordsburg. Highlights included Governor absence read by L. Cook, a powerful Dempsey address, Chavez speech, extensive membership reports, and a spectacular Friday parade led by State Police.

New High School Principal Roy Melugin Arrives in Lordsburg

Roy Melugin arrives with his wife and their 26 month old son after serving as principal in Dalhart and Pleasant Hill. A University of New Mexico master's and a Colorado AB degree lead his credentials. he studied at Peabody and New Mexico Normal, and began teaching in Carlsbad before moving to Lordsburg. The family, born in Gainesville Texas, married in 1998, joins Lordsburg's school community.

The Junior Auxiliary scrap book directed by Mrs. Mosell Messecar received first prize at the recent state convention. The exhibit, displayed in the Union Store center window, drew much attention.

Registrations fall short of last year in Hidalgo County

Hidalgo County voter registrations total 1780 to date in 1939, well below 2440 in 1998, a deficit of 560. County Clerk records show about 700 qualified voters still unregistered and urged to register at the clerk's office as 1940 election year nears. Lets All Go Western To Honor The Big Fair

Mayor Ernest J. Short outlines plans to promote the Southwest New Mexico Livestock and Fair. Lordsburg prepares grounds as rains aid the race track, water lines extend to the fair, stalls rise, and top animals and goat and sheep displays are expected. The Woman's Department led by Olive K K Cruse and 4H clubs will showcase agriculture and cotton features with daily races set before the September 21 opening.

Pioneer resident Robert H Woods dies in Lordsburg

Robert Henry Woods born January 18 1875 Hillsdale Michigan died August 14 after long illness. He moved to Silver City 35 years ago, then Red Rock ranch, settled Lordsburg in 1920. Funeral 4 pm Tuesday at Heather Funeral Home led by Rev Hall, burial in Lincoln New Mexico.

Malone Family Visits California for Daughter’s Graduation

Mr and Mrs Kk J Malone and son Benny traveled from Lardebure to Los Angeles to attend the August 10 graduation of their daughter Gladys Gene Malone. She earned Magna Cum Laude among 11 top graduates, won the John R Gregg award, and scored 97.6 on the graduation test from Woodbury College. The family then visited San Francisco before returning home.

CC F Lienesch of the Civil Aeronautics Authority visited Lordsburg airport on Thursday. He was one of the famous air race promoters seen in Lordsburg in earlier years.

Mrs Conner Plans California Visit with Family

Lordsburg Schools Set to Open September Fifth

Lordsburg announces the new school year with Tom J. Mayfield as superintendent and Mo Melugin as high school principal. Evelyn Gustafesen leads Home Economics, one faculty vacancy to be filled soon, and students must register or adjust enrollment by August 2. Gymnasium floors and ceilings have been renovated, and free textbooks will be issued for core subjects in the high school.
