The fourth annual Soap Box Derby is four weeks away with the event set for Sunday September 8. Entry forms are at the Chamber of Commerce behind the youth center or city hall, with an August 30 deadline. Lawrence Garcia Medina 76 died August 10 at Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City. Born August 10, 1909 in Lordsburg he lived there his whole life and worked for Southwest Supply before retiring in 1974 then at Up To Date Grocery. Survived by wife Lupe, three sons in Tucson and Reseda, three daughters in Riverside and Lordsburg, two siblings, twenty two grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Services at St Josephs Catholic Church with burial at Shakespeare Cemetery.

Fausto Noce Sr was taken to El Paso for open heart surgery on August 7 and is recovering well at Sun Towers Hospital, aiming to be home this Saturday.

Animas School Board met Tuesday August 13 and accepted the resignation of Sherri Richins. Bill Coker recommended Robert Tate as mathematics teacher and coach while Noel Smith urged Kelly Tate for 2nd grade Michelle Johnson for first grade and Barbara Pendelton for special education. Bus contractor and driver lists were approved and discussion covered Texas education reform including mandatory teacher testing for future educators and eligibility rules for education majors.
