Vandal costs district as B B gun damages TV gym windows

Lordsburg School Board heard Superintendent Phil DeFoor report that a summer vandalism incident caused by a B B gun damaged the front gym windows, costing the district 1570. He outlined back to school dates with teachers reporting August 18 and staff August 19.

Three Arrested For Suspected Robbery Near Arizona Line

Three suspects were arrested last week and charged with armed robbery in a $95 heist of a stranded motorist east of the Arizona line. The victim, en route to California, flagged down help after his vehicle broke down. A car with a gun demanded money, prompting the motorist to jump onto the freeway. A description via CB radio led Hidalgo and Lordsburg officers to stop a vehicle between the 20 and 22 mile markers. In the car, deputies booked Mike Wayne Taylor Kenneth Wayne Tubbs and Randy Allen Wheeler, all Mississippi residents, on armed robbery charges with bond set at $15,000. Also found were controlled substances. Other detainees included several with DWI, a driving with suspended license, and related offenses.

Phelps Dodge Resumes Smelting At Douglas Arizona

Phelps Dodge Corporation announced the resumption of smelting at its Douglas copper smelter after a consent agreement with the EPA and Arizona Health Services. Smelting must terminate by January 15, 1987, with about 280 workers back on the job after July 9 suspensions. Nearby, Shakespeare Ghost Town plans a special August 9 preview tied to Rita Hill’s book Eighty-Proof, with $2 admission and free town tour for buyers of the book.

Queen Contest Plans Highlight Hidalgo County Fair

The Hidalgo Fair features Miss Hidalgo and four Princesses with ages 13 to 15 and two younger groups. Entries must be filed with local chambers of commerce, with a photo session and sponsorship rules set for August. Hidalgo County Pork Chop Challenge at the fairgrounds

The first Hidalgo County Pork Chop challenge will be held at the fairgrounds on Saturday August 23 1986. Pigs race a 50 yard sprint with regatta style start to favor Lordsburg entries. Prizes will be awarded and residents are invited to enter their pigs with contact for The City Corner.
