Fair Parade Plans Advance For Hidalgo County Fair

The Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce previews the 1986 Fair Parade set for Friday August 22 at 2:00 p.m. with the theme Toward The Future. Contest entries totaled 47 including Lets Party Hidalgo County Land of Wine and Roses and Wildest Dreams. Cash prizes of 100 70 and 30 will be awarded in each division. Participants may enter floats vehicles groups or individuals on foot. Contact Marsha Hill at 542-9864 to reserve a parade spot.

Brett Hogan Awarded Posthumous Commission

The late Brett C. Hogan of Playas was awarded a posthumous commission as second lieutenant at Officer Candidate School graduation ceremonies held July 27 at the New Mexico Military Academy in Roswell. Hogan was killed in action.

Absentee Ballots Availability for Local Special School Election

Hidalgo County Clerk Margaret P. Coogan announces absentee voting hours from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. July 31 through September 4 for the Special School District Election on September 9, 1986. A separate obituary notes the posthumous commission of Spec. 4 Hogan, who died in an automobile accident February 9, 1986, with family in Playas and Huachuca City attending the ceremony.

Balloon Festival Scheduled in Lordsburg Aug 15

The Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Annual Balloon Festival on August 15. Six hot air balloonists have confirmed for the 1986 Third Annual Balloon Festival with events including a Friday registration, Shakespeare and Steins tours, a Saturday dance, and a 6:30 a.m. balloon lift off at the County Fair Grounds. Admission to the dance is 3 dollars for singles and 5 dollars for couples.

Phelps Dodge Reports 1986 Cash Profit and Copper Sales

Phelps Dodge reports profit exclusive of 16 100 tons mined at Morenci for Suminomo interests acquired 15 percent stake as of February 7 1986. Copper sales totaled 101 800 tons in the 1986 second quarter and 198 700 tons for six months, against 102 700 and 191 100 tons in 1985. Manufacturing earnings from operations were 5.0 million for the first half of 1986 versus 5.7 million and 12.5 million in the prior year. Capital outlays were 22.9 million in the six months ended June 30 1986, up from 8.6 million in 1985.

City Corner lays out summer program wrap and upcoming city projects

The City Corner outlines the end of the Summer Youth Program with support from Mayor Hill and the City Council. Crimestoppers Help Solve Two Cases

Two Lordsburg Crimestoppers cases were solved with help from two anonymous local callers. Call 542-8827 about the Hidalgo County reward of 100 dollars or 1-800-432-6933 for the State Crimestoppers to arrange payment plans for the same reward. Both callers must share case details with Crimestoppers staff. The Sheriff's Department and Crimestoppers thank these citizens for reducing crime.

Last Session For Swimming at Lordsburg Pool

The last session of swimming lessons will begin at Lordsburg Municipal Swimming Pool on Tuesday August 5 at 11 AM. Cost is 10 dollars for 10 half hour lessons, ending August 16. For more information call the city pool at 542-3774.

Funeral Services Held For Accident Victim Veronica Hancock

Veronica Lynn Hancock 25 died July 22 from an automobile accident. A Playas resident born in San Manuel Arizona she was a Catholic communicant and softball league member. Survived by husband Charles Clay Hancock and children Erika Jade and Christopher Ray. Funeral rites at Our Lady of Fatima Church Bayard with interment Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers named. Curtis-Bright Funeral Home arranged service.

Football Players To Meet Thursday

Prospective Lordsburg High School football players should be aware that there will be a squad meeting Thursday August 7 at 10 00 a.m. at the Field House. Equipment and lockers will be issued to those athletes who have taken their physicals. If an athlete did not take the physical exam that was given last May he must pick up a folder from Fred LaMarca Athletic Director at the Swimming Pool. He will then be responsible for having a physical before he can practice. The first practice will be on Monday August 11. Athletes are to be on the field by 8 00 a.m.
