A seven juror panel convicts Jack Armstrong of voluntary manslaughter in a Globe Arizona case. The court will determine a sentence between one and ten years after deliberation. trial started Wednesday with jury selection completing on Saturday.
A break-in at Lynn Hatch's residence occurred Friday evening after a window was pried open and the screen removed. A neighbor reported the back window left ajar and a pass key used to enter. a desk was disturbed and small items missing.
A Tuesday evening crash occurred about two miles east of Lordsburg at 7 40 PM when a 1951 Chevrolet driven by Teresa Lopez failed to turn into a driveway and was struck by a 1954 Pontiac Station Wagon passing to its east. The Pontiac driver was M D Lee of Texas Ma Arkansas. Police officer Joe Rutland investigated the scene and found minor damage to both cars.
Friday night at 7 30 the Hidalgo Old Timer Association meets at the home of Mr and Mrs Sam Gass. Members are urged to attend to appoint a committee and outline activities for a Timer Reunion planned for September.
On August 15 rehearsals begin for the coming school year with daily sessions through August 26. The schedule lists Beginning Band at 9 15, Senior Band at 11 00, and Junior Band from 10 to 2 39.
Lordsburg Schools Music Department offers baton twirling to students from grades 1 through 12. Instruction aims to teach correct twirling with two age groups and no charge as part of the summer band program. Registrations open Monday at 7:00 in the high school band room with instructors Linda Moseley and Connie Young.
Civilian Defense Director Dick Rice announced plans to establish a local Ground Observer Corps in Lordsburg starting in September. S-Sgt. Raymond Rogers and S-Sgt. Arthur Choiniere visited to organize, meeting with the city council, which expressed support and offered assistance. Volunteers are asked to commit two to four hours weekly to sky watching, with names being accepted now.
James C. Mathews, 30, an ex Navy man, was lodged in the county jail Friday night after stopping at the Port of Earty Road Forks and seeking police protection in Lordsburg. He claimed he was being bombed and may be mentally ill. Authorities from New Mexico State Police investigated and arranged for relatives to retrieve him. he and his father were linked to Georgia, with prior residence in California.
Promoters announce Lordsburg event August 15 to 16 featuring 1880 era dress and Western fashion. Beards and sun bonnets encouraged with share permits at the Chamber office for 1.00. No bull-pen this year but police will supervise streets to ensure cooperation. Margaret Codding, secretary of the Chamber, invites community fun.
The National Education Association and New Mexico Western College sponsor a 27 day trip to Mexico. The group departed El Paso on Tuesday with a reception at the Hotel Paso Del Norte. Members include Mrs. R R Traylor and Mrs Dudley Robertson of Lordsburg.
The El Paso Social Security Office will join a nationwide celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the Social Security Act. District manager Samuel C. Anthony notes the act became law August 14, 1935, and explains early limits while highlighting expanded coverage now reaching most workers with old-age and survivors insurance.
As the new school season nears many teachers seek housing. Anyone with a house or apartment to rent is asked to contact Mr Freeburg's office at phone 42 for rentals and referrals.
Chief Sanchez announces a new traffic light at Railroad Avenue and Main Streets to coordinate underpass and Highway 70 northbound flow. The green arrow signals westbound underpass traffic when Highway 60 westbound is red, but drivers must yield to southbound Main Street vehicles entering the underpass.
Four Lordsburg residents face arrest in two towns after a July 26 burglary of James Allen’s home yielded stolen guns. A Lordsburg suspect confessed to thefts, three guns were traced to youths, and three more guns were recovered in Palomas, Mexico. One officer was knifed in Palomas, and two Lordsburg suspects were jailed there. the remaining offender fled to Lordsburg and was jailed locally. Names are omitted.
Mr Wesley Freeburg and Mrs Freeburg are in Rochester Minnesota for medical tests at the Mayo Clinic. He is slated for surgery on Thursday. The couple resides at 806 West Center Street.
Lalo Sanchez reports July activities with miles patrolled and 48 cited or arrested for offenses. Overtime parking led with 18 fines of 1 dollar, liquor violations 11, two DWI at 160 each with 12 month licenses revoked, plus other petty fines and jail time.
Harber Heather is appointed by Governor Simms to the State Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers for four years. He joins Paul Salazar of Albuquerque and Carl Wolfe of Clovis as fellow appointees. Heather is serving his fifth consecutive term as Secretary of the Association.
