Nora Ownby, widow of J. R. Ownby and a founder of Lordsburgs growth, died after a prolonged illness. The funeral at the Church of Christ drew many locals and out-of-town guests, with remarks praising her as a civic benefactor and pioneer.
Pon and Ed Momfort enjoy a two week visit touring the San Francisco Exposition and western points. Their itinerary included Boulder Dam and Tahoe, with stops in Los Angeles and San Francisco. The journey impressed local officials and the Banner Mine superintendent, who praised the Western tour.
Engineer Thomas M accompanied by Mrs Mc representative of the 8 in Lordsburg on the way to Santa Fe and San Francisco. They had been to attend the National State and aid of Engineers Ex.
Governor John E. Miles will call a special election on September 16 to vote on issuing $1,450,000 in bonds for institutional buildings. Despite high costs and popular resistance, the Attorney General’s office says the election is mandatory and polls are expected to show a decisive defeat for the bonds.
The Chamber of Commerce reports Fred H. Joy of Rochester Minnesota sent a greeting card from Mayo Brothers Hospital for observation and treatment. He praises the hospital as a very beautiful place.
The third Texas Hereford Tour of 1939 will offer an intensive herd visiting program in the Texas Panhandle. Sponsored by the Texas Hereford Association and the Panhandle Breeders Association, the three day itinerary on August 10 to 12 includes visits to herds in Amarillo Canyon Happy Dimmit Hart Tulsa and other Texas points. New Mexico stockmen are invited to join the tours.
The funeral for Mrs. Bessie Uhl was held Sunday at Heather Funeral Home with Rev. Paul H. Elmore delivering the sermon. Music by S. H. Gass and others, pallbearers including Basil Giles, and interment at Mountainview Cemetery. Basil Giles traveled from New York to attend and stay with his father W. H. Giles.
Mr and Mrs F M Jordan and their family relocate from Hurley and Bayard to Lordsburg. Mr Jordan works as a welder for the Lordsburg Wrecking Company.
Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Nally welcomed a seven and a half pound son named Lonnie Dale Nally at 9 30 Thursday night. Mrs. Nally is home and both mother and baby are reported well. Boyd is recuperating.
First Baptist Church led by Pastor Paul H. Elmore holds Sunday School at 10 a.m. Morning worship at 11 a.m. with subject Partnership. B T U at 7 p.m. for ages under one hundred. Evening service features The Assurance of the Believer. Wednesday prayer meetings held nightly.
Mrs. Eva Marshall grows many passion flowers on a west side vine. This year the blooms are perfect and after the petals fall an egg shaped apple forms on the stem. Some readers consider these apples a delicacy for food.
A new state law requires all contractors to obtain a license except those working on highways railroads irrigation projects and those drilling for oil or gas. Mrs Ena Walter historian of the Robert Swan Post No 30 has prepared a superb Legion scrap book. It chronicles unit and member historic events and stands as a fine piece of work.
A Utah writer responds to Mrs G Richardson praising last week's Wa'ethout Legionnaires column while defending the off color jokes. The letter also thanks readers and recalls a front page image of children singing Jesus Loves Me as a sacred memory.
Sam Killebrew spends a week in Carlsbad where he purchases a large shop making famous cowboy boots. He has also bought a shop in Clifton but does not intend to move to either town.
All members are urged to attend the Missionary Society meeting Friday August 4 at the home of Mrs L Robinson.

Miss Vera B. Riggle arrived Saturday from Albuquerque where she had attended summer school for a few days visit with Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Ownby before returning to her home in Texas.
Mrs Bruce Hatfield is confined to her home by illness and unable to attend daily activities. Family and friends are advised to send prayers and best wishes during her recovery.

Members and guests of the Wednesday Bridge Club enjoyed an afternoon of bridge at the home of Mrs. Harold Rolfe. Attendees included Mesdames L. B. Robinson W. F. Winterer J. R. Poindexter K. J. Short J. W. Clark W. C. Downey and H. B. Buvena.
A special meeting is called for Saturday at 7 40 pm in the K P Hall to finalize arrangements for the two luncheons to be served during the American Legion Convention. Members are urged to attend.
Mrs. Floyd Jones of Breckenridge Texas is visiting her sister Mrs Ollie Williams and family.
The Harfly team in the city league softball receives red jerseys with white sleeves bearing the Budweiser chest emblem. O J Moon, manager of Up To Date Liquor Co of Hatch, donated the jerseys to fans and players alike.
Barflies snap a 13-game skid by beating the Miners 10 to 4 on Friday night as new Budweiser jerseys debut. Maindraggers top Oilers 12 to 10, and Maindraggers beat the Marlies 17 to 3 in the prior game. Standings show Maindraggers 4 4, Miners 4 4, Barflies 1 4, Oilers 1 4. Six-game weekly schedule begins Monday to finish season before term start.
Mr and Mrs Kay Kington visited the Giant Sequoia forest in California on a western tour and gathered a sack of seeds described as tiny and smaller than cucumber seeds. They saw a tree about 40 feet in diameter and noted it could yield timber for a large house.

Ray Edington notes a thirty foot century plant in the J. E. Allen residence front yard attracting as many as two dozen humming birds. Many flowers bloom but the plant is deteriorating and will fade from the scene after blooming ends.
Miss Anita Carolyn Clayton daughter of Mr and Mrs Tom Clayton will wed at the Clayton ranch home at eleven oclock The couple will begin a motor tour to the San Francisco Exposition and other Pacific coast points and return to the Alvarado Hotel after September first Full details will appear in the Liberal next issue
C A Conner city marshal warns the public to expect arrest and prosecution for speeding in restricted areas and for failing to stop at stop signs. The firm but friendly message targets violators to curb dangerous driving.
Chairman Key Kerr pledges a major gathering as Post 46 El Paso supplies a sixteen piece orchestra for big dances. A large Douglas delegation boosts the lineup with Legionnaires and Chamber of Commerce members. Drum and Bugle Corps from Albuquerque, Silver City leaders James Ryan and Centra l back 100 percent attendance, with Santa Fe Artesia reservations and bids for 1041 Governor Miles escorted by County Commissioner Townsend in a cattle-brand decorated car.

They found a five foot rattlesnake with eight rattlers on the Lordsburg Silver City highway near George Cureton ranch. The snake was killed and tied to the car bumper and brought to town. It hung in front of the liberal office during Monday morning 2% e drawing much attention and a autograph was made of the publisher holding the snake.
A group of friends enjoyed a chicken dinner at the Fisher home Wednesday night celebrating PAllor Fisher's birthday. Attendees included Oscar Noce Myles Cohen Charley Powers Lloyd Wallace John Ball J A Jones Marshall Fuller and Junior Chase.
Mr and Mrs Claud Olney plan a weekend trip to Albuquerque with a short departure schedule and expected return on Sunday. The organizers did not announce any public events or engagements.
The Silver City Daily Press notes W. M. Bennis as manager of the Lordsburg Liberal for issuing a 20 page American Legion state convention number on July 28 to welcome Legionnaires to Hidalgo County for what is hoped to be the largest Department of New Mexico meeting. Advertisers backed the Liberal edition and the Liberal printing plant is praised as key local business contributors.
Rainfall in Lordsburg and southern counties exceeded flood levels with generous showers reported by the Southern Poet gauge. July totals reach 0.19 inches, marking the lightest July in years, while Animas and nearby areas report near flood rainfall, following 0.42 inches the day prior.
Seventeen little friends gathered at the Hill home to celebrate the birthday of Sherrill Hill three year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hill. Mrs. Hill was helped by Miss Leona Webb. Guests received balloons and handkerchief favors. Gifts were described as pretty and useful. Mr. and Mrs. Nat Garnmon and Dr. and Mrs. C B Austin return from a week long fishing trip to Eagles Nest and other points in northern New Mexico. They stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Earle Kerr in Santa Fe while the men fished. A telegraph to Mrs Kerr said her brother was ill in San Antonio Texas and later worse prompting police to locate Kerr. The Kerrs left for San Antonio and progress reports say her brother rallied after arrival.
Miss Anna May Conrad of Animas was seen in Lordsburg on Thursday touring local sites and meeting residents. Authorities or organizations mentioned in the record are not identified.
