Marquis Smith writes from a moving train detailing stops in Albuquerque, Clovis, and Portales and plans a four hour Lake Michigan boat ride on the lake's largest steamer. He notes a forthcoming broadcast time unknown.
The Friday bridge club met at the home of Mrs Richard Tatsch last Friday with guests Mrs Oscar Allen and Miss Beryl Chattin. Mrs Bavens won high score and refreshments of strawberry ice cream cookies and ice tea were served. Mrs Tatsch was assisted by Miss Dorothy Singer in serving.
Mrs. S. M. Chase Mrs. G. W. Tremble and Mrs. Wm. Townsend returned Friday from a visit in Long Beach California.
Elliott Roosevelt and his wife Ruth Googinen visited Lordsburg after driving from El Paso. They toured the Chamber of Commerce and viewed the Gallery of Famous Americans and wedding snapshots, then headed to Douglas for a political meeting. Eleanor Roosevelt’s signed letter to Holt is included in the account.
Cadet Charles J. Jeffus delivered a lecture at the Methodist pulpit on his two years at the West Point Military Academy. He described its founding by George Washington, the four year program, and the path from plebe to Army commission. Brigadier General Short praised cadet Jeffus.
The Thursday afternoon bridge group gathered at Mrs Richard Tatsch’s home with members Mrs E S Allen Mrs Oscar Allen Mrs Claude Olney Mrs Frank Winters Mrs J L Augustine Mrs Ernest Short and the hostess. Mrs Ronald Egon won high score. Guest Miss Beryl Chattin attended. Mrs Theodore Kiine visited El Paso to see a ill brother.
The Methodist Sunday School held a tea Monday afternoon in the church basement despite heat and vacations. Superintendent Fuller led the program with Mrs. McInnis and Mrs. Singer, plus several young helpers, offering music two vaudeville sketches and a game before serving tea. Guests sent offerings in silver or tea for the cause, and locals and visitors extended thanks to the students, leaders, and the “standing army” of regulars for summer work and timely support.
The McDonalds Mortensen Tucker Gordon families express sincere appreciation for sympathy, gifts and flowers shown by friends and neighbors in the death of their mother and sister.

Gertrude Maude Simpson Kedzie daughter of Mrs Sarah Simpson died Sunday at 12 30. Born January 10 1886 in El Paso she moved to Lordsburg as a child and became a central social figure. She married Stewart Kedzie and leaves son Don H Kedzie. mother 77 sister Mrs George Stokes brother Captain William Simpson Texas Ranger. Funeral at Heat her Mortuary with T A Phillips preaching at Church of Christ. Pallbearers included Nat Gammon George Wood and others. many floral tributes.
Contractor Dick Tatech has begun a fine filling station for the Ritter Walker Company on the former Evans Motor Company lot. The old structures will be removed 46 feet back to make way for a highly modern building.
A soul stirring portrayal of Simon Peter titled The Rock will be presented at the Methodist Church Sunday evening at eight o clock by Rev and Mrs W M Justice and a cast of Tularosa youths. Admission is modest. The drama follows Peters life from call at the Sea of Galilee to denial and morse.
Mrs. E M Fisher hosted an elaborate dinner Tuesday evening honoring her son Marion Billo who turns 21 the following day. Attending were John Ball Boyde Wallace Tom Bleauvelt Myles Cohen A L Conner Fausto Noche Andy Hernandez Alton Warren David Wright and Joe Sullivan.
Miss Hazel Pendleton and her brother George Ed of Cloverdale were in town Tuesday for unspecified business or social calls, with their presence noted by local observers.
Mil waukee visitors Pay and Hortense Buehman told Lordsburg locals they were loaded for the frontier, after a wiper warned of fierce roads and Bisbee bills. The women chose the border route to Tombstone, promising to visit Lordsburg again. The Lordsburg chamber of commerce clarified three routes, and the party headed on.
At Tuesday’s City Council meeting J. H. Fitzpatrick was named city auditor, the same position he held last year. Fitzpatrick brings extensive experience to the post.
Mr Walter Boswell entertained last Thursday with Mea Hortom as guest of honor. The party included Mrs Harry Martin J K Vinson L C Brown Arthur Shumaker Ben Cochran H Scofield Scott and visitors Hern trom San Simon plus Misses Ima Fairly Bertha Scofield Mery Horton. Horton won high and Mrs Martin second. Dainty refreshments were served.
A tourist sought directions from George W. Gephart about reaching Lordsburg from Hidalgo. Gephart pointed to a Lordsburg sign on a nearby warehouse and explained the town is indeed Lordsburg, clarifying the mix up with Hidalgo branding on hotels garages and stations.
The regular W M A meeting was hosted this week by Mrs Frank Corbell with a lesson from Ad let chapter. Miss Meryl Hackett, living with Mrs. Dee Hall this past year, spends the month with her parents at Rodeo. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Arnold and daughter Helen from Tucson visit relatives here. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Heldt return from San Antonio where they visited Mr. Heldt’s father in business there.
Miss Lowise Jessen, after a three week visit with Miss Dorothy Stengele, has returned to her home in El Paso.
Miss Lucy Rows sister of G L Ross and Miss Laurastine Walch of Chicago are guests of Mr and Mrs G L Rows. The young ladies are becoming expert horsewomen.
Mrs. W. C. Downey entertained the Welmeeley bridge club Thursday complimenting Miss Lucy Ross and Miss Welch of Chicago.
A large audience enjoyed a recital at Mr and Mrs Ed Wright home on Friday night. Pupils of Mrs T B Williams earned piano and violin certificates and prizes. Certificates went to Olive Ann Wright Terry Williams Opal Wright and Charles N Williams. Mary Jane Colson received a piano prize card. Medals honored Opal Olive Ann Weight and Terry Williams for progress. Refreshments followed served by local attendees.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Smith left Wednesday morning for a brief vacation on the Pacific coast. They plan to drive to San Diego and the ocean resorts in the area.
GoOD IDEA Contractor Tatach erected a cement step in front of the Hollen Hotel block. The plan originated with Joe Hollen and involved all property owners aiding the project.
Van S. Welch and Mrs. Welch of Artesia were hosted by Senator and Mrs. Atwood. Welch is described as a prominent independent oil operator.
Mr and Mrs Chas Yarbrough of Animas were visitors in town Saturday.
A large summer crowd attended the free sport and trade day last Saturday. George D. Walser organized the boxing events on the Citizen Conservation Service program drawing the day’s largest crowd. Lordsburg beat Rodeo in baseball by a wide margin. A man versus horse race saw John Ball on Carley's Dimples lose to the horse by half a length after an obstruction near the finish.
Mrs. G. D. Macey wife of the State Highway Engineer and sister of Mrs Norman McCluskey was injured practicing jumping for a horse show on a slippery wet ground when the horse fell catching its front feet. She is confined to bed with a fracture on the left side and head, unconscious for about an hour before recovering. She expects to be out in about ten days and has won cups at Army Horse Shows including Ft. Bliss.
Miss Florence Cureton is visiting Miss Beth Ball this week, sharing time at their social gathering. The arrangement highlights a held social visit among local residents.
Lordsburg lost to Rodeo Saturday 9 to 3 marking their first defeat in five games. On Sunday the Lordsburg team defeated Duncan 5 to 0 and will host Central Sunday at 2 30 PM. Central is described as a strong team in the region.

Virden farmers expect a large potato harvest with prices more than double last year. About 100 car loads will be sold from the Duncan Valley, with growers netting around $2.00 per hundred pounds. The Duncan Valley Produce Growers, Inc. coordinates marketing across Arizona, New Mexico, El Paso, Albuquerque, and Abilene, Texas, aiding price gains and quality standards.

Mr Frank A. Sykey led the Junior B Y P O and entertained the group at Mr Sol Miraf O M Parks home Tuesday after games were played. A social hour followed with refreshments served.
Mrs Nora Ownby celebrated fifty one years in Lordsburg as a resident after marrying in California on July 17 1882 and arriving July 30 1882. She built the Ownby hotel and became a noted figure. Mrs J R Schwarz left Friday for the fall style at the Y hotel and will complete purchases for the Schwarz Ready To Wear Shop.
