George S Benson warns of undulant socialism as the government takes over coal mines after strikes. He argues the move expands state control, raises costs, funds a welfare program, and endangers freedom, urging vigorous early treatment to prevent broader overruns.
Marilyn Hood of Roswell visited Betty Bradford in Lordsburg for a theatre party. Guests included Mary Lou Brown Nancy Har Wood Chevyl Hill Barbara White Patsy Crouch Karen Steele and the honoree with Betty. After the show friends were entertained with refreshments.
In May the Baptist Missionary Union gathered at the Church on Wednesday. Mrs. Sam Gass led the discussion on Community Missions and members reported on their local missionary actions.
The regular B P W meeting at Mrs Mertice Brooks home covered a State Convention citation for a 20 percent membership increase, the book distribution plan, and a new hospitality committee. Delegates from Lordsburg celebrated the honor while August 22 is set for the next gathering and watermelons were shared.
Mrs Myrtle Kerr former president of the American Legion Auxiliary 1945 46 received a fine award for the Lordsburg Unit. The honor is an autographed copy of the American Legion Auxiliary History 1934 35 given by Mrs Otalee Fulwider president of district 7. The unit was recognized for the best all around program for 1945 46 and mentors are proud.
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Gass and Miss Gloria Gass were in El Paso for several days last week visiting and sightseeing.
Local column recalls weekend escapes to Mogollon Mountains and Colorado plans of Richins and Baxters. Neighbors report birthdays, arrivals, a hospital admission, a return from California, and a horses sighting on Main Street.
Marston C. Reed, a Veterans Administration representative from Fort Bayard, will be at the Hidalgo Hotel in Lordsburg on Thursday August 8 from 1 p m for the rest of the day to help veterans and families secure benefits through itinerant service.
Last Saturday Mr and Mrs Cc F Young were surprised by a visit from their nephew Hardin Young of Brawley California He is manager of the Brawley Airport and flew a man from Niland to overtake the Californian in El Paso They arrived in El Paso with five minutes to spare It looks as though the Youngs will have to clear a landing strip at their place.

Superintendent Tom Mayfield attended a Tuesday gathering in Silver City with the 8. W. District superintendents and principals from Grant Catron Socorro Sierra Otero Dona Ana Luna and Hidalgo counties. A casual round table on 1947 legislation state school finance aid and service improvements occurred. Christene Chaulk resigned to take a job in a college town.
The Lions Club met Tuesday noon for its regular luncheon. Baron Auriema of the Salvation Army and F. M. Donnell of Phoenix Public Relations spoke. Guests included Billy Kimbleys and Harber Heather. Foods were provided by Carl Lehman, Harold Scofield and John Paulos for 22 members and guests.
The Church of the Nazarene at Seventh and Shakespeare lists Sunday School at 10 a.m. Devotional service at 11 a.m. Junior Society at 5 p.m. Evangelistic service at 7 30 p.m. Midweek Prayer service held each week. Pastor Rev. O L Wright oversees activities.

He notes prefabricated huts leaking plumbing and details the Japanese school system with separate boys and girls schools and uniform dress. He describes low wages of 300 to 500 yen monthly, frugality, a hike with a man carrying wood and flowers, and farming on steep hillsides surrounding the area.

The N and T Club met Tuesday with Mrs. W. E. Oxsheer. Only six members attended because many were away. Guests included young Nancy Clark and members Mrs. Maud Green, Mrs. Eulah Ownby, Mrs. F. R. Poage, Mrs. Elizabeth Scofield, Mrs. George Trimble and the hostess.
New Mexico G I s will centralize Rocky Mountain veteran insurance matters in Denver with a end of July start. Prompt replies and quick premium notices will follow as four state area records move to the new office. Carpentry leads on the job training with 461 veterans, followed by 185 in electrical work and 74 in plumbing. About 70 percent of veterans have engaged in training, leaving over 4 170 still eligible for benefits.
A program of social work is to be set up in VA offices and hospitals across New Mexico to assist veterans facing difficulties readjusting to civilian life due to injuries, war-born anxieties, or related issues. VA representatives statewide will provide information to interested veterans.
Dr. William H. Mikesell, chief psychologist of the VA, says many veterans suffer anxiety neuroses far beyond public knowledge. He notes that most are beyond help because they do not recognize they need it, and cites a surprising factor: mothers’ influence was a major reason men cracked under war’s rigors.
The Birthday Club held a monthly party last Saturday evening as a picnic on the Silver City road. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Willis and Sammie, Mr. and Mrs. Arlo Benson and Barbara, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bowman and Sharon, and Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Hunt.

Mr and Mrs Dewey Jones returned from a monthlong vacation visiting Utah Nevada Colorado and Wyoming. They reported enjoyable travels and scenic sites across the four states.
Following a severe heart attack Philip Causland 97 of Lordaburg died Thursday at his home after brief illness. Relatives were en route for his funeral with services pending. Burial will be in Silver City.
